A bit about Matthew D

I am an expert in my fields, and have a deep understanding of and passion for the subjects I tutor. I achieved a first class degree in Physics & Philosophy and then Mathematics & Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford. I am currently a PhD student in Cosmology at Queen Mary University of London and a private tutor. I love Physics and Maths, and I bet I can get you loving it too! My students have always found me friendly and easy to communicate with. They particularly admire my passion for the subjects I teach and end up feeling some of that passion themselves! I'm able to break down difficult concepts and explain them in a variety of ways to maximise my students' understanding. This is beneficial both for improving understanding of material on the syllabus, but also for going beyond it and bridging the gap between Secondary School and University. My teaching focuses on two things: deep, conceptual understanding and problem-solving ability. Conceptual understanding is a pre-requisite to a true understanding of a topic and one’s ability to answer questions. It’s also the springboard for exploration into areas beyond the syllabus where fascinating ideas can be discovered and passion for the subject developed. Once a firm conceptual foundation has been built we can move on to developing problem solving ability using exam-style questions and challenges. This addresses the skills needed to achieve the top grades in exams. I have experience teaching all major exam boards for Maths, Further Maths and Physics, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, IB and Pre-U. I teach Year 12 and above. I love my subjects. During my time as a student I’ve learned many fascinating things about the world around us through Maths, Physics and Philosophy. I became a tutor to pass on the both the insights I’ve gained into these fields and my passion for learning them. I was also fortunate enough to have had several inspiring teachers throughout my studies. My own tuition style is modelled on theirs. Having me as your tutor will give you 1-to-1 access to a practicing academic with published scientific papers and a high-performing academic background. At school I achieved A* grades in Maths, Further Maths and Additional Further Maths A-Levels and a Distinction First Class in Physics Pre-U, I successfully sat the PAT and interviews for a place at Oxford to study Physics and Philosophy. I then earned a 1st Class mark in Physics and Philosophy BSc and a Distinction in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. I am now in my third year as a PhD student in the Astronomy Unit at Queen Mary University of London. I study early universe cosmology. I have no official teaching qualifications, but I have worked as an online tutor for nearly 8 years and worked as a professional teacher for a year at a Secondary School in Wembley where I had 4 classes. I have also won awards in several Mathematics and Physics competitions including UKMT, BPhO, BMO and Plancks. I am proud of what all of my students have gone on to achieve. I have helped many students to boost their grades, pass entrance exams and receive offers from Oxbridge. One of my fondest memories of teaching, however, is when I taught a Year 12 Further Maths class. Over the year my students went from being daunted by their choice to take Further Maths to becoming genuinely passionate about the subject and enjoying our lessons the most. We also started a Mathematics Society after-school club because so many of them were keen to learn things beyond the syllabus! No topic is too difficult to understand if it’s taught well. My sessions are tailored to the individual needs of my students. For my most able students my lessons are run in a similar way to Oxbridge tutorials; they’re interactive, dynamic and challenging. The purpose of these lessons is to develop a deep understanding of the material and independent ability to solve problems. For students requiring a more comprehensive overview of the syllabus, my sessions aim to give them mastery over the basic skills required for the course. All lessons involve the student tackling practice questions. The difficulty of the questions are appropriately selected based on my student’s needs. Practice questions are then used as a springboard for further conceptual discussion or as a way to diagnose areas of difficulty for subsequent targeted practice.
