Sherpa's Summary

Great, experienced tutor.

A bit about Molly

I am a PhD student, studying English Literature, a published author, and am writing a novel. Being able to connect with my student(s) on a one-to-one basis. I love being able to learn about a student's interests and tailor my tuition to their likes and dislikes, ensuring that they get the help they need, and develop transferable skills they can take not just into their chosen subject, but all subjects, and the world at large. About 5 years ago I tutored a then-13-year-old boy who didn't like science very much. When I had sessions with him, I helped him approach the material in a way that was more relatable and accessible for him. I ran into him again a few months ago. He's now 18 and going to university to study chemistry. First lesson is always an introduction where I get a baseline for the student - what methods they like, what they need help with, topics they're already confident with - and I use that to tailor my teaching going forwards. If a student likes flashcards, we work off flashcards. If a student is good with their grammar we touch on it but don't linger. If a student hates their set texts we make it more accessible. Everything is planned off that first lesson, and we build from that foundation. We can adjust it as we go, but that's how we start. Slow and steady. Learning is a marathon, not a sprint. In a word, variety. I love all the different aspects to English (and maths and science) and that every client I have is doing something similar but not identical. I love every text currently in the curriculum and how every student can have a completely different perspective on each one, and having the potential to connect with my students 1 on 1. I specialise in creative writing, as I am a published author, and working on a novel right now, but English in general (literature, language and writing) is my specialty. I am running group classes on poetry and creative writing here on Sherpa to get students used to exam style writing.
