A bit about Ian

I trained as a teacher of English and Drama. Since then, I have taught English in schools in the UK, Singapore, China and India. Although English language and literature are my specialist subjects, through experience I have worked as a teacher trainer and have written course books for Cambridge International Examinations. These training materials have been used all over the world. I have a Masters Degree in Education and qualified teacher status in the UK. I have tutored children and adults at different times through my long career in education. As a retired teacher now, I have more time to devote to helping students learn and grow. The ability to express yourself clearly in speech and writing is an essential life skill. I love seeing students develop confidence as they learn about register and tone - basically, that you adapt how you speak and write according to your audience. You will find me friendly and patient. I am also thorough in how I prepare lessons. I won't be lecturing you - I'll be working with you to hone your skills and help you reach your academic goals. Some students prefer freestanding lessons, full of tips and worked examples. Others want to complete assignments between lessons. I will always read and comment on these through the messaging system at no extra cost to the student. We can discuss your preference in our introductory meeting. The best thing about being a tutor is the joy of seeing students overcome self-doubt and start to believe in themselves. Learning should be a joyful experience and not a chore. It is my duty as a tutor to make sure that you, the student, progress each and every session. To achieve this, each lesson will be based on a clear learning objective which we will agree together. Students from across the world have always appreciated the way I put their learning needs at the heart of every lesson. I once taught a young man who spoke no English at all ( he was from China). Since then, he has graduated from a top American university and has native speaker proficiency in English. Much as I love classroom and individual teaching, my greatest pleasure has been teaching English through drama. I have produced and directed many plays and musicals including Macbeth, Tom Sawyer and HMS Pinafore. There is no better way of building confidence than by allowing learners of English to show off their mastery of word and song in a stage performance.
