A bit about Finnbar

Hello! - I have only two slots left for new students - Tuesday at 6pm and Saturday at 7pm. Please reach out if this time suits you for weekly sessions. My name is Finnbar and I am an enthusiastic, bubbly, qualified English teacher. I was teaching in a secondary school until 2022 and have now moved my work online so that I can follow my passion - surfing. I pride myself on delivering top quality sessions that are tailored specifically to the needs of each individual. Book in a free video chat and let's talk about your goals! I have one student that I have been teaching since they were in year 11. When they came to me, they had never achieved above a 3 in English and were really struggling. They ended up getting 5s in Literature and Language, and they are now in their dream college. I now tutor their siblings as well! It was an extemely enjoyable, rewarding journey for both of us. I have recently graduated from the Teach First programme with distinction, which has a mission of ending educational inequality in the UK by training great teachers and putting them where they're most needed. I taught for two years in a secondary school in Yorkshire. I have also taught at an international school in Spain, where I got on so well with the students that I ended up tutoring some parents in speaking Engilsh as well! My most recent school uses the AQA English GCSE, so I am very familiar with this specification. However, I am confident in teaching the variety of skills needed to approach most specifications used in the UK. Just ask! On top of this hands-on teaching experience, I have also studied educational psychology. In 2020, I graduated with a first from Bournemouth University with a degree in Psychology. In the final year of this degree, after my year of teaching in Spain, I chose to specialise in educational psychology. This gave me a great insight into how much of an impact you can have when you address each student's individual needs. Transferring this to my tutoring, I always make sure to tailor the sessions to each student. Every student is different, and therefore needs a unique approach to their learning goals. I love teaching in a classroom to a large group, and thrive on the the spontaneity of having so many people focused on the same idea or task. However, I have realised that there is just as much satisfaction in coaching a student 1 to 1. I often teach students who I wish I could teach by themselves to see what they could really achieve with my undivided attention. For this reason, I have turned to tutoring so that I can help people master a variety of English skills. I have already helped my online students to achieve and surpass their predicted grades set by their teachers at school!
