A bit about Sian H

I have been teaching internationally for more than 40 years and have a wealth of experience in teaching all aspects of the English Language and all aspects of world Literature in English to students from all corners of the globe. I have worked as an examiner for a number of examination boards also. My focus in teaching has been on all things related to English language including first and second language learning, and literature. I specialise in assisting students in comprehension and deconstruction of all kinds of texts, literary and non-literary, and in helping them become fluent and articulate communicators both orally and in written form. I adapt my teaching style to best suit the learning outcome in any given situation. The main focus is on critical thinking and open communication. The needs and personality of each individual student dictate the style I employ: sometimes it is lecture style, sometimes explanatory and other times I work more as a facilitator of the student's own learning. I once had a student, in Year 10, who came to tell me how much he was struggling in the literature class and added that he had never read a set literary text in his school career: he had bluffed his way through by reading summaries and watching videos. We built up a trusting relationship and after much tutoring and mentoring we discovered that he was dyslexic. He then received the appropriate support and his self esteem was much boosted.By year 12 he was an active member of the class. He wanted very much to take a leading role in The Crucible, which I was directing with the year 11 class but was worried about the reading. I recorded his lines so that he could listen to the words and in this way he became a confident and convincing cast member, if not the star of the performance.
