A bit about Roxanne B

I'm a specialist English teacher. I am a GCSE examiner which provides me with insight to help students secure their desired grades at GCSE. Additionally, I help to prepare students for the 11+ exams. I was the gifted and talented co-ordinator when I worked at Frogmore Community College as I am able to stretch and challenge students (academically!!!) so that they achieve their full potential. My most recent teaching post was at a special needs school as I wanted to develop my skills in this area. It was a really rewarding position and has enabled me to support students with a variety of learning needs. Usually I will speak to parents or guardians in advance of the first session to glean as much information about the new student as possible. I will discuss desired outcomes, current barriers to progress etc. I always ensure that my first few sessions are extra engaging to get students feeling excited (or at the very least: positive) about their sessions. In most of my sessions I use powerpoints to provide visual aids and online resources such as quizlet to learn vocabulary. Sometimes a student will show up to a lesson asking to go over something from school. When this happens, I put what I had planned on hold and focus on supporting the student with their school-based learning. I first began tutoring 12 years ago just before I started teaching. Since then things have developed and now tutoring is my full-time career and not just a side hustle. I love sharing my enthusiasm for literature with students and finding out which texts make them tick. The most rewarding part about teaching my subject is when I see the progress that my students make. I try to ensure my lessons are fun and engaging. I provide my students with plenty of motivation and support to achieve their goals. I was the Head of Drama at my previous school which probably gives you a bit of a clue about my personality. Having said that, I still get the most out of my students; we have a good time but we also focus on making progress.
