A bit about Carol S

As a college teacher, every year is exam year for all of my students and I am practiced at covering the whole Foundation GCSE syllabus in 1 academic year. This is where my strengths lie; checking prior knowledge, correcting misconceptions, filling the gaps and practicing exam techniques. I am experienced with both AQA and Edexcel exam boards and have recently been accepted as an examiner for Edexcel. I have worked closely with Learning Support and have experience working with SEN students. With each topic I start by checking prior knowledge to establish a starting point and move forward accordingly based on individual strengths and weaknesses. I explain, I model, I ask the students to try for themselves and always check understanding before moving on. I include exam style questions in the lesson and break down what the examiners will want to see to gain full marks. As my experience is in a college setting, all of my students have previously failed their exams and many lack confidence and motivation. I am calm, patient and very flexible. I understand that 'not everybody gets it' and will break topics down to a suitable level. I also understand the frustration of those who just missed out on a pass, or fear just missing out and will work to fill the gaps, focussing on what they need to get them over the line. Most of my experience is with students aged 15 to 19 who have been learning maths for many years. They like that I am approachable and make things clear and simple and often say that they learned more with me in 1 year than in all of their years at school. Many students come to me believing that they are "no good at maths" when actually, they just needed it explaining more carefully. I came back into education as an adult and remember what it was like to be the student. I had some good teachers who explained carefully and didn't make me feel bad if at first I didn't understand. I also had poor teachers who did not check understanding and ploughed on regardless! I learned a lot from this and base my teaching style on those 'good teachers'. I love teaching maths but I understand that many of my students are only studying maths because they have to and so I try to make it as painless as possible. All of my teaching experience has been in the UK but I have recently moved to Brazil which is why I am now teaching only online.
