A bit about Sunnil S

I can work with any exam board and I have served as the Maths Subject Advisor for Pearson Edexcel. With over 25 years of teaching experience, I have successfully taught all key stages in secondary schools. Other previous roles include classroom teacher (with responsibility for A Level), Head of Department, Trainer for new teachers (PGCE) and Lead Practitioner for a substantial Multi Academy Trust. I am an expert in exam technique and have also published a maths revision guide incorporating memory skills for maths. I have served as both a classroom teacher and a teacher trainer and have been rewarded with successes in both. My role as Head of Department afforded me the opportunity to demonstrate successful team and subject leadership. I was approached by the then Headteacher to restructure the school’s maths curriculum and department. My input resulted in a significant implementation of a three-year programme with year 9 pupils in 2009 culminating in a 100% A* to C maths GCSE pass rate in June 2012. This was accomplished at a non-selective school and it outperformed the 2 selective Grammar Schools in the area. As a teacher trainer, my cohort of PGCE students always achieved 100% pass rate with most graduating as ‘outstanding’ from the University moderation. However, my most memorable accomplishment was with a year 11 student who was told by most of his teachers that he had a learning difficulty and would never pass maths. I was new at the school and offered to help him every day briefly during his lunch breaks, in the run-up to his examinations. He passed and achieved a grade C which was an amazing result in the short time we were afforded. My philosophy on teaching Mathematics has naturally evolved over time. I presently find myself speaking from the same ideology as the NCETM’s Director, Charlie Stripp who advocates the ‘mastery approach’. The use of variation theory features strongly in my approach to pedagogy but most important is the need to break down seemingly complex subject matter into their constituent parts so that it becomes simpler for the learner. As mathematics is synoptic (all parts are linked/interconnected), difficulty with a topic usually stems from these ‘gaps’ in knowledge with other topics that present themselves as ‘a lack of understanding’ and can be addressed. My philosophy is that all students can be successful if shown how to approach mathematics in a logical sequential manner. I make the complex seem simple by breaking questions down into small sequential steps. Having over 25 years teaching experience and also trained other teachers, I am an expert in exam techniques. With this knowledge, I am able to successfully guide students around their misconceptions and steer them onto exam success. I have published a maths revision guide incorporating memory skills for maths.
