A bit about Ned

I'm seriously enthusiastic about education. I've been tutoring for the past three years, and have had countless amazing experiences with students whose capability and confidence has transformed in our time together. This is what I love about tutoring; when you get to step back and compare the first lesson to the last lesson and see how much your student's have grown. I teach English and History at all levels, including 7+, 11+, Common Entrance/13+, GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate. I also teach essay-writing and creative writing skills to students of all levels. Finally, I have a lot of experience preparing students for entry into competitive schools. So I also teach Interview Preparation for 13+ entry and for Oxbridge applicants. I like to have three tasks to a lesson. The lessons always start with a two-minute catch up, just so that I can check in with my student and get a sense of how they're feeling and what progress they've made since the last lesson. Then I'll always ask them if there's anything they'd like to work on (homework, a particularly difficult question). It's important for me to be flexible, and to respond to my student's needs on the spot. To keep things moving, I prepare three tasks (eg: a reading, a writing and a discussion task), and spend 15-20 minutes on each. In the last five minutes I set any homework that needs setting, make sure we recap everything we have covered, and lay out very clearly what I expect from my students before our next lesson. I first started tutoring three years ago, in June 2020, while studying History at Oxford University. I tutored part-time through my degree, and have been tutoring full-time since December 2022. In total, I have taught over 200 hours of one-on-one lessons. At school and University I was always a really hard-working student, and especially while at Oxford I became deeply passionate about studying. So my favourite thing about teaching is being able to convey this joy. I love it when, after a few lessons, students leave any shyness at the door and start saying things like "this is actually really cool" or "I really like how that is written." Being able to change how a young person thinks about studying, showing them that it is 'cool' and 'exciting', is actually a seriously profound and life-changing act, and is definitely one of the perks of the job. For me it's a combination of two things. On the one hand, it's all about empathy, enthusiasm, personality, joy and creating a safe space. I've had students arrive at first lessons in tears, months away from their first GCSEs and with no idea of how they will get through them. It is vital to make students feel heard and for them to want to be in the lessons, otherwise we will get nowhere. However, on the other hand, this is all meaningless without serious hard-work, commitment and lessons which are well-grounded in my own deep knowledge of the subject matter. This is something I pride myself on, and it is an academic integrity which is the fundamental of teaching. So, my teaching style is a combination of the carrot and the stick. I'm personable and welcoming, but also to-the-point and clear about what we are here to do. I teach all exam boards (AQA, OCR, EDEXCEL, IB, WJEC, PEARSON, you name it) and all levels, from 7+ all the way to Undergraduate.
