I like my students to feel in control of their learning so I listen carefully to their concerns and work at a pace to suit them. We will regularly review progress and revisit previous learning to make sure we build knowledge and understanding. Students learn in different ways and as a tutor I will tailor my teaching to suit your way of working. This will be a team effort! I trained in 1999-2000 and have taught in 4 very different schools, but have spent 20 years at a prestigious boarding school working in a range of roles from tutor to Housemistress, Head of Department and Head of Competitive House. I have 1-2-1 experience both in person and online and a 100% rate of boosting examination performance. My work as an examiner has given great insight into the specific requirements of a range of awarding bodies. Both my subjects deal with the power of communication. My greatest enjoyment in teaching is sharing the knowledge of tools communicators use to achieve results. This may be a poet evoking memories of war or a playwright making us laugh. Maybe a politician stirring the hearts and minds of their audience or a journalist urging us to action. Words are tools and knowing how to use them and understanding writers’ techniques is at the heart of my teaching. We will find out what you need help with and create a plan to target your needs. Working together to achieve results will be a rewarding experience for both the teacher (me!) and the taught (you!). There are so many routes we can take - I can’t wait to meet you! My philosophy on teaching is straightforward - we learn in order to improve our understanding, generate empathy and build confidence. Curiosity is to be encouraged! Ask questions - be thoughtful - be the driving force in your success. “I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.” (Invictus. William Ernest Henley) My lessons are engaging and “fun”. I’m renowned for getting learners out of their seats and active! We also use play dough to re-create scenes and characters. I am a creative teacher and like variety in teaching methods - always with the students’ blessing of course! Greatest teaching success? 100% pass rate in every class taught for 20 years? That feels good. The shy student who last week raised her hand to read aloud for the first time? That felt great! The class who had scared off 7 supply teachers and eventually allowed themselves to believe in their capabilities and gained amazing grades in a subject for which many thought was a write-off? That’s definitely one of the best! Helping Sixth Form students apply to Universities and share their excitement as offers role in? Always a winning feeling! In every lesson there is a win. That’s why I love teaching. BA (Hons) English Literature PGCE with QTS English Language and Literature GCSE Examiner GCSE Team Leader (Training Examiners) A Level Examiner IB Examiner A love of literature coupled with inspirational teachers meant teaching was always my ambition. My Mother was also a teacher so maybe it’s in the blood! Outside teaching I taxi my 3 children around their varying social schedules! Musicians, sports players and actors - they keep me busy! I have 2 dogs and a cat plus an ancient house with acres of garden to maintain. My husband and I like an occasional escape to a restaurant and we all love travel especially our annual drive to France where we share a holiday home with our best friends and their children. Years 7-13 Key Stages 3,4 & 5 WJEC, EDUQAS, OCR, AQA, Cambridge International and the International Baccalaureate Diploma
