A bit about Roisin B

Hi my name is Roisin and I am a from Northern Ireland, UK.  Previously, I was a children's nurse, graduating with a BSc in 2000 and I spent the last 10 years of my career specialising as a nurse teacher. I have lived and worked as a nurse in England for over 20 years, spent 6 months in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and a few years in Doha, Qatar. I returned home to live in NI in 2021 and have been teaching English online since then. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Assessing, which I obtained in 2012 whilst working as a nurse teacher and have a wealth of experience in both classroom and online teaching. I was keen to change my career and in early 2021 and following my passion, I began teaching English online. I have taught students of all ages (child to adult) and have recently been focussing on tutoring student's who are preparing to take their GCSE's. It's been a big career change, but I'm delighted to do a job I thoroughly enjoy! To continue to improve my teaching skills I successfully completed a CELTA course in July 2022. I have taught over 3000 online classes and have always received positive student feedback. I began my teaching career in 2010 when I started working as a nurse teacher and I utilised these transferable skills to specialise as an online English Language tutor in early 2021. I am an avid reader and have always been keen to further develop my own vocabulary range. I am passionate about analysing a text or a book to try and understand what message the writer is trying to convey. Good writing helps us to process the world around us and enable us to become great communicators. I am a passionate teacher and will make sure the learning environment is relaxed and friendly. I like to ensure students have lots of opportunities to identify their own learning needs and work in partnership with them to improve. I believe motivating students is critical to their learning and I always aim to make them feel that it is okay to make mistakes as this is how we all learn.  I am a sociable person and I love to get a good understanding of where a student is struggling and help them to remove any barriers to their progress. It is so fulfilling watching a student's journey to success, whatever that might be for them, and knowing that I was in the privileged position to help them achieve this. We all learn in different ways, at different paces and are naturally better at some subjects rather than others. I believe that with the right teacher, student's can achieve their learning goals and mistakes are an important part of the learning process. I like to have an introductory class with my students to get to know them and get an understanding of their learning needs. Based on the outcome of this baseline assessment, I will develop a lesson accordingly, based on their preferred method (i.e visual learners will like colour, charts etc rather than all text). I like to set objectives for each class and ensure I review the objectives at the end to identify what learning has taken place. I am constantly reflecting and adapting my teaching strategies based on the individual needs of the students. Nearly all of my students feedback will mention the friendly and relaxed learning environment I have created. They also acknowledge my honesty and transparency if I don't know the answer to a question they have posed or when giving them feedback on their performance. I offer interactive classes so students are able to stay engage throughout all of the lesson. I have had many small and big successes throughout my career from designing brand new curriculums to helping a student on a 1-1 basis. At present, I would say my greatest success has been my ability to change my career. I have been able to specialise in English language teaching after a long career in nursing through utilising my transferable teaching knowledge, skills and experience. I have a a Diploma in Children's Nursing, a BSc in Neonatal Nursing and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Assessing. Additionally, I successfully completed a CELTA course in July 2022. My Father was a secondary school teacher and I feel that teaching has always come naturally to me. I was fortunate enough to be able to become a nurse teacher after I had enough clinical experience back in 2010 and I have never wanted to do anything since then. I have had some great teachers in the past and I know the difference they can make to a learners life. I love travelling and have been to around 30 countries, I have even done some solo trips! In my spare time I love reading, watching crime detective shows, walking, going to the gym (on good days) and going to bars/restaurants with friends. I also enjoy cooking, I will try anything once. I don't play sports but I love to watch Ireland in the Rugby. Mostly I have taught AQA, CCEA and Eduqas up to GCSE level, I have a goal to become familiar with the A level curriculum and teach these students in the near future.
