A bit about Joseph

Hi! Pleased to meet you! : ) My priority as an Art tutor is to craft a positive narrative and ensure that my students know when they are doing well and making progress. My praise and encouragement comes from a very authentic place because I am genuinely enthusiastic about the work of young artists. Although I am never short of ideas and technical advice when students feel stuck, my long term goal is to build and strengthen their individual sense of pride and ownership as artists. When I qualified to teach in 2017 I decided to dedicate myself totally to Art! Because of this I do now spend a lot of my free time visiting art exhibitions and making my own art work in my studio at the bottom of my garden. Despite this increased focus on art, I still have lots of other interests including music, film, archaeology, politics, and video games. In my current teaching role I primarily work with KS3 and GCSE students. However I have plenty of experience teaching A-Level from previous roles and through Sherpa. My current school opens their new sixth form in September 2024! Most Summers I also teach Art to international students. These are usually mixed groups with a range of languages, ages and ability levels. I have also done a bit of teaching with adults, visiting trainee teachers at universities and artist groups to share my ideas about teaching and my beloved subject. I am most familiar with AQA specs for KS4 and KS5, but it is not a problem if you use a different exam board such as EdExcel or OCR. They are fairly similar! The beginning of lessons are usually focused on developing or refining ideas. Images are pasted onto the whiteboard where we draw on them and make annotations. Sometimes I use Photoshop to prepare bespoke references for my students. Once a plan has been established, I will usually give a quick practical demonstration. I use two webcams in my lessons. One for conversation and one for demos. I ask students to do the same where possible. When this isn't possible we photograph our work and send it to each other via the chat or messaging features. A good chunk of each lesson is dedicated to making work. Students make practical progress while I provide guidance, feedback and encouragement. I will often work alongside my student. I use the experience to inform my guidance. At the end I send my students images of any exemplar or demo pieces to use as a reference. For many years I actively avoided specialising in any one discipline as I felt it was more valuable (and interesting) to explore as many different skills as I could. Although these days my practise has settled down a bit and centres around drawing, collage and painting, I still love it when my students' work drags me into uncharted territory.
