A bit about Brian D

I am experienced with all of the exam boards (AQA, OCR, Edexcel, IB, CIE, Salters). My undergraduate degree was in Chemistry from University College Dublin. I have a PhD from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) in BioOrganic Chemistry. I worked as a university lecturer for almost 15 years both in this country and in Kuwait. I have been a private tutor for A level Chemistry and Biology for the last 14 years. I specialise in A level Chemistry and Biology and have taught Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and Biochemistry at university level. I've also helped students with EPQ's in a variety of Biology and Chemistry topics. I try to make my lessons fun and engaging. I spend time talking about exam technique, helping the students to understand the concepts and approach exam questions in the correct way. During lessons I spend time on previous exam questions from different exam boards (AQA, OCR, IB, EdExcel, CIE). I give problem sets after most lessons. I always praise students when they do well and try to be constructive in my criticisms if they do not do well. I am always happy to discuss a student’s progress with his or her parents. I started tutoring almost 40 years ago when I was a PhD student in the United States. At that stage I tutored university level Organic Chemistry. I started tutoring full-time in this country in March 2009. During the pandemic and subsequently since, all of my lessons have been online. Every student is unique and the lessons are tailored to their particular needs. No two lessons are the same. Students will have their own strengths and weaknesses and my job is to bring out the best in them. I always take an interest in a student’s hobbies and what they do outside of school. I get great satisfaction in helping students to plan out their future and achieve their ambitions. Over the years many of my students have gone on to study at top universities both in this country and abroad. I have kept in touch with many of my students and their parents.
