A bit about John W

As a History Teacher, getting others enthused and passionate about the past and applying skills of critical thinking and analysis in exploring how today's world has been shaped by what has gone before is the key cornerstone of my professional practice. However, learning is not only about absorbing knowledge and key terminology; nurturing curiosity and a desire to expand not only one own horizons and aspirations but also in developing perspectives on how to make the world a better and more equitable place are critical tools of empowerment that we all should aspire to master. Broad and developed insight into the following exam boards and topics, with track record of delivering excellent attainment (65% '9' award IGCSE 9-1 Grading, August 2023; 100% GCE A Level History A and B grades, August 2023): Cambridge IGCSE Interwar European Relations 1918-1939 Rise of Fascism and Totalitarianism 1923-45 Germany: From Versailles to Potsdam 1945 From Tsar to Soviets: Russia and the USSR 1905-41 The Roots and Catalysts for the Cold War The Cold War: Containment, Expansionism and Espionage The Middle East: Post-Colonial geopolitics and ethnic strife, 1970-2000 Cambridge A Level French Revolution 1789-1805 German & Italian Unification 1915-1871 Industrial Revolution 1780-1890 Russia in Revolution and War 1894-1921 Interpretations & Historiography on the British Empire Interpretations & Historiography on the Cold War US Soviet Relations and Dynamics of a Cold War relationship 1950-1991 Communism and Containment: The Cold War in East and Southeast Asia 1945-1991 A Promised Land? Conflict in the Middle East 1948-1991 Pearson Edexcel - IGCSE Superpower Relations: Development of Cold War and a World Divided 1943-1972 Dictatorship and Conflict in the USSR 1924-1953 The Fall and Rise of a Superpower: China 1900-1976 The American Dream? The USA 1918-1941 Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level In search of the American Dream: USA 1917-1996 The Road to Independence: India 1918-1948 Rebellion & Disorder: Tudors 1483-1603 Pearson Edexcel International A Level Russia in Revolution 1881-1917 China 1900-76 Germany United, Divided & Reunited 1870-1990 A World Divided: Superpower relations and geopolitics 1943-1990 Fully qualified GTCS/QTS History and Humanities teacher. Experience delivering International (CIE & Pearson Edexcel), English National and Scottish curriculum in History and wider Humanities subjects with Lower Secondary English. Teaching practice developed and refined through experience as both a teacher, faculty head and school leader in UK domestic and diverse international settings. A consistent track record of helping learners both aspire to and attain excellent academic outcomes at both IGCSE and A Level, providing pathways to future studies at Cambridge, Exeter, Edinburgh, LSE, MGIMO and many other institutions of international repute and distinction. Fully certified Cambridge A Level Examiner (9489 History). My ethos is to provide learners with the foundations and springboard to develop confidence, criticality and an innate sense of empowerment and belief to succeed in their specific academic pathways. Providing a learning environment where learners are encouraged to take risks and explore their aspirations and talents is of paramount importance, and no matter the situation the learning is tailored to suit the needs of the individual and delivered with a smile. The key foundations of my success as an educator have been an ability to develop positive and aspirational learning relationships forged on trust, respect and honesty. Developing a learning framework that is contextualized and deconstructed relative to the needs of the individual, accessible and allows for discovery and fun has provided many positive memories and led to consistently excellent examination results. In a busy and fast-paced world, my ability to de-clutter and process key learning objectives into digestible and relevant segments has allowed my students to build the confidence and efficacy to exceed their initial expectations time and time again.
