A bit about Dave W

Before becoming a teacher, I had 20+ years working as a physicist. I did a PhD where I worked on a NASA mission, spent 10 years in the NHS curing cancer with radiation, a few years working in Climate Change, and then into teaching. When I am not tutoring, I tour schools with my planetarium teaching kids about space (and other things) - from reception children in primary school to A-level physics in secondary. I strongly believe that science is something that everyone can get to grips with, with the right help and direction. I am a successful scientist, but it did not come without some help from the people around me and some great teachers. The rewards are well worth it, and by passing this on to the next generation I hope to create scientists of the future! I specialise in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths at KS3 and GCSE, and Physics at A-level. I also target preparing students for examinations and developing exam and revision techniques. This year I am starting as an examiner for 2 UK exam boards (AQA and OCR) and fully understand the requirements of written examinations. PGCE (Secondary Science – Physics specialty) PhD (Astronomy) MSc (Radiation Physics) BSc (Physics/Astrophysics) I pride myself on creating a positive and nurturing atmosphere and have lots of success using this approach. My teaching style is to guide the students through the topic with examples they understand, and then include practise for them to consolidate their knowledge. I use traditional methods like targeted use of past-papers and spend time to develop exam techniques. I also like to take time with a student so together we understand how they like to learn and to develop specific techniques for that student. If you feel you need some extra help with your science (and don't we all sometimes!) please get in touch and we can see if we can't find a way to get you to where you want to be. Aside from my visits to schools with my planetarium, I’m an unsuccessful metal detectorist and a successful carpenter. I also volunteer for an awesome charity which is one of the best things I’ve ever done.
