A bit about Toby W

My name is Toby Wilks, and I am a CELTA-qualified, native English language teacher, with over twenty years’ experience in teaching at all different levels, from complete beginner to proficiency. I live in the New Forest area in South East England, and I offer online lessons to people of all ages and backgrounds, all over the world. I have taught in countries such as Spain, Poland, Brazil, Indonesia, as well as here in the U.K. I have a great deal of experience in helping people perfect their general English, their professional English, and to prepare for examinations such as the FCE (First Certificate in English / B2 First), CAE (Cambridge English: Advanced / C1 Advanced) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System), to name just a few. I specialise in both general and business / professional English, as well as in Cambridge examination preparation. I have helped many people with their general English, to improve their communication skills, as well as their reading, writing and listening skills, perhaps because they are moving to the U.K., or they just want to be able to communicate with a multinational community. I have also helped many different professionals improve their English language to facilitate both oral and written communication, and understanding, in a professional environment. I have worked in-company with financial institutions such as Monex Europe and Euler Hermes, and law firms such as Slaughter and May, Gide Loyrette Nouel and Shearman and Sterling, as well as multinational companies such as the Maire Tecnimont Group. With regard to exam preparation, I help people achieve the grade / score they want in tests such as the FCE / B2 First, the CAE / C1 Advanced, and the IELTS, to enable university entry or for citizenship / visa purposes. I like to teach in a lighthearted, communicative manner. An average lesson aims to incorporate all the basic skills in English (speaking, reading, writing and listening), but with a main focus on what each individual student specifically wants or needs in order to reach the level that they are trying to attain. I aim to make my lessons as interactive as possible, so I like to encourage the speaking and communication aspect, as it is extremely for people to be able to apply what they have learnt in spoken form, and not just in written form. Therefore, any vocabulary or grammar that we study together will be applied in speaking exercises and topical conversations during the lessons. I will also provide a written record of any mistakes that are made during the lesson, as reading these enables each student to identify some of the areas that they need to work on. I encourage every student to make a note of any areas of the language that they are finding difficult, and to send these to me before the next lesson. This enables me to ensure that each lesson focuses on their specific areas of weakness. In that way, planning lessons becomes an interactive process between the teacher and student, ensuring that each individual’s specific requirements are met. The thing I most enjoy about teaching is the communication aspect - helping people to communicate with those around them, whether in the workplace or a social situation. I also make every effort to help people understand the British culture and way of thinking, as this can help them to feel more at home, whether living in the U.K. or working with British colleagues. I like the idea that through speaking the same language, different cultures can learn to understand and accept each other on all levels. I have a Cambridge Assessment CELTA qualification (the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, now known as the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This is known as the gold standard for teaching English language to foreign nationals, and is the most widely recognised English teaching qualification in the world. It is respected by employers, language schools and governments all around the world. I live in an area of the U.K. called the New Forest on the south coast, and in my spare time, I enjoy walking in the forest, spending time with my family by (and in…) the sea, and travelling as much as possible. I also enjoy a good book and listening to many different types of music. I teach people of all different ages, from very young children, to school / university students, to working professionals, to more mature students. People are never too young or too old to learn!! I help people prepare for all of the Cambridge examinations, such as the CAE (C1 / advanced exam), the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) for university entry and U.K. citizenship, the FCE (Cambridge English: First / B2 exam), the BEC (B1 and above Business Preliminary). I can also help you prepare for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and any other English language test you may need help with.
