A bit about John M

I have 11 years’ experience with Cambridge International Economics for both IGCSE and A 'level. Also, several years teaching AP Economics for both Macro & Micro. My expertise is in explaining Economic concepts to struggling students (especially with English as a second language) for topics including: Price Elasticity, Monopoly, Perfect Competition, the PPC, all Supply & Demand scenarios including international trade & tariffs, Taxes, Consumer & Producer Surplus, LRAS, AS & AD, Cost Curves and Foreign Exchange - to name a few. As for Business Studies, for the last 16 years I have taught GCSE, IGCSE, OCR Nationals, AQA Applied, UK & Cambridge International A ‘levels and lectured as a guest speaker for the Enterprise Department at Buckingham University. Having previously worked for 30 years in multinationals helps me to link business theory to reality, gaining AO2 marks. I like to help students understand concepts so as to remember them, rather than learn reams of text off by heart; I will help to bring your textbook to life and motivate you. Some of my students have three lessons a week with me throughout the year, usually to study an entire syllabus, without a dedicated teacher. Other students use me once a week to consolidate their learning after lessons in school, while helping with homework. Finally, some students contact me just before exams for a few last minute revision lessons - often these classes prove to be very productive: I will explain how to answer essay questions so as best to maximise your marks according to the demands of the Assessment Objectives, while also offering revision PPT's and videos to maximise time & benefits. Please feel free to message me directly so we can set up a call to discuss your needs in more detail. I was born in London and educated at an Oxfordshire Boarding School, where I enjoyed a wide range of extracurricular activities. I am a husband and a father to two sons, one who has a Business Degree, while the other has an MSc in Economics. I am also a Black Belt & UKCC Judo coach, who enjoys playing Chess with my students in school and on www.chess.com Colleagues consider me empathetic, competent, patient & passionate about teaching. I previously enjoyed a successful career working in sales & marketing for Jaguar Cars in London, as well as roles in Chicago, Cape Town & Tokyo. In 2006 I was appointed MD of an international division of FTSE100 giant Allied Domecq, with marketing responsibility for targeted global brand extension for brands like Mumm Champagne, Malibu Rum & Laphroaig Scotch Whisky. Such varied experience helps students to apply their textbook learnings to real life situations - gaining AO2 Application marks. With 15,000 hours of teaching & tutor contact time across 16 years, I am an experienced UK qualified Economics & Business Studies teacher & examiner. I've worked internationally, as Head of Department for the last 15 years, as well as Head of Y11, Head of KS4 and Head of Secondary School. I started tutoring part time in 2021 and went full time in 2023. I love watching students grow in their learning, making progress and maximising their potential. It's especially satisfying when students suddenly grasp difficult concepts, especially in A-level Economics. While my lessons are often similar, they are all unique. Each lesson will focus on students needs, specifically what they want to learn or revise. I use PPT's during the lesson and also talk a lot - but I encourage students to ask questions and take notes. I'll then send a copy of my PPT on after the lesson, with embedded revision video links for homework. Being a teacher and a tutor is hugely rewarding. My least favourite thing is saying goodbye to students each year after exams, but many stay in touch as they move onto university or work in the business world. I measure my success in terms of their progress and potential, rather than just A-grades. Typically I ask my students what they would like to review in my lessons, or which concepts they struggle with. I then use PPT's for an audio visual presentation to cover a specific topic, frequently raising formative assessment questions to check learning. I will also link topics to other areas of the syllabus, as well as to typical exam questions - ensuring students understand the importance of Assessment Objectives. At the end of the lesson I seek further feedback from the student and will then send helpful revision resources. As a father I am empathetic, considerate and open to feedback.
