A bit about Niki M

From a young age, my interests have been literature and teaching, which is why I chose to study English with Creative Writing at Queen Mary, University of London, and afterwards attended Cambridge University to complete my PGCE in Primary education, which provided me with QTS. I am Chilean, Brazilian, and Greek, and I speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese fluently. I have over 3 years of experience tutoring children aged 7 to 15 in small groups and one-to-one at schools and online in Maths and English. I have helped Brazilian students with English as a second language in preparation for the TOEFL examination. I also volunteered for tutoring services, where I helped children improve their reading and writing skills and confidence. I am enthusiastic about teaching children and seeing them grow academically. My favourite subject to teach is English, as I love writing creatively and reading fiction, and I want my students to develop their creativity as well. Therefore, I try to incorporate activities where students create stories and work on new ideas, which helps them develop their confidence in their writing, and, hopefully, inspires them to read more as well. The teachers we have in our primary years can shape a lot of what we grow up to become. They influence us every day through more than just their lessons. We pay attention to their actions, how they treat us, what they say and how they encourage us to improve. In my early years, I was highly motivated, and I owe a lot of it to my amazing teachers. They showed me the worlds of fiction and fantasy, inspiring my love for reading and writing and, in the long run, giving me the education I needed to come to England to study English with Creative Writing. I look up to them, and they are the reason I decided to become a teacher! I will tailor the sessions to the goals set in conversation with the student and parent. We will focus on the areas where the student believes they need more help, and I will strive to improve their confidence in these areas. If the student wants to focus on improving marks, we will do mock examinations regularly to look at how the work is reflected in their marks. Depending on the student, lessons can include essay structuring, how to write a compelling introduction and conclusion, and how to answer essay questions most effectively. If the goals are around creative writing/reading, we will work on creative prompts and activities that will help the student feel more comfortable around making mistakes and thinking outside of the box. I measure students’ progress through questions about the topic and homework if that’s something the parent/student would like. Every student learns differently, therefore, I am open to suggestions on how to help each individual student be the best they can be!
