A bit about Laura K

I have 10 years post-graduate experience teaching mainstream primary aged children as well as 4 years’ experience teaching children with complex learning and medical needs in a specialist SEND school. I have been tutoring pupils privately in their homes and online since 2017. I enjoy tutoring pupils 1.1 and love to see the progress that they make over time. Before studying for my PGCE, i worked as a teaching assistant in a small 1 form entry village school. This experience was invaluable as i not only understood the inner workings of a primary school but it also helped me to deploy teaching assistants once i graduated as a teacher. I also worked in Sri Lanka for 5 months as part of SL Volunteers teaching English as an Additional Language and volunteering in special needs centres. My specialism is supporting pupils with SEND. I have extensive experience tutoring pupils with a range of SEND needs including specific learning difficuties (Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia) and Autism. I have also worked within specialist SEND units attached to Primary Schools. The unit i worked in provided specific support for children with hearing impairments. I worked from November 2017-April 2018 in a SEMH school (primary and secondary) which focused on the social, emotional and mental health needs of the children and young adults within their care. Within my specific role as a specialist SEND teacher i have taught children with learning difficulties including but not limited to: ASD, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Speech and Language needs, SEMH and sensory needs in KS1 up to KS4. I have an English degree and have experience teaching KS1 up to GCSE English to pupils. I also enjoy teaching Maths and have experience tutoring this subject from KS1 to GCSE. I have taught EAL to adults online and face to face including abroad: Sri Lanka, Zambia and Morocco. What I love most about bring a tutor is witnessing the "WOW" moments when the pupils I teach grasp challenging concepts, their eyes lighting up with understanding. The personal connection formed during tutoring allows me to tailor my approach to each student's unique learning style, fostering a sense of confidence and academic growth. It's immensely rewarding to be part of their journey, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential. My teaching style is student led. I see myself as more of a facilitator for learning. I ask pupils questions which develop self learning and critical thinking skills enabling them to find the answers and solutions through exploration and problem solving.
