A bit about Rachel G

I am a teacher and tutor and also a mother of 2 boys. I have been teaching in a very multicultural school in Edinburgh and have over 15 years teaching experience. Building up good relationships with all my pupils is very important to me. I specialise in teaching English. I have taught phonics for many years and have seen lots of children learn to read and write. Many of the children I have taught don’t speak English to start with so I teach in a fun and visual way. I find out what the children are interested in and this engages them in reading and writing. I plan lessons with an introduction, main teaching part and a plenary to talk about the learning. I like to have a PowerPoint and pictures for a visual and an educational game to start or finish the lesson. 15 years ago and I have tutored children aged 5-16. Engaging who I am teaching, seeing their confidence in the subject grow. Getting to know the students and finding lessons that really interest them. To have a growth mindset and keep trying and never give up! You can achieve so much if you set your mind to it. They enjoy the use of questioning I use all the time, the activities I plan and the quizzes and games! Seeing children learn to read and write is such a rewarding experience! Being in the outdoors with my family and my dog. Running and cycling in different places. Reading a book somewhere quiet and trying out new recipes to cook! I teach the Scottish Curriculum SQA and I teach all year groups from 5-12 years. I tutor children up to 16 years.
