A bit about Amanda S

I have over fifteen years teaching experience in both primary and secondary schools and adult education. Additionally, I also worked for an online learning company, for six years, producing educational resources. I have also been a 1-1 tutor in schools helping to improve student’s GCSE grades. I have a thorough knowledge of the GCSE syllabus across different exam boards. This means I’m able to guide my students to improve their answers to gain higher grades. I’m also qualified as a Specialist Dyslexia tutor. I’m really excited to be now offering 1-1 English tuition online and I’m actively trying to grow my tutor business meaning I have some availability to take on new students. I am a specialist dyslexia tutor and professional member of the British Dyslexia Association. I can tutor both children and adults with SEN including study skills to university students. Some of this specialist teaching consists of helping with the organisation of writing as well as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This can also help with GCSE English especially for improving writing, time management and revision. My philosophy is that everyone deserves the same chances in life and education is the key to this. I therefore listen to my learners about what they find difficult and tailor my teaching to their needs. I stay flexible so that I am able to adjust my teaching methods according to my students style of learning. This I believe is the best way to encourage achievement no matter the student’s background or educational need. I have worked with AQA and WJEC for GCSE English. For Functional Skills I have worked with C&G and OCR. I can teach English to Years groups 9, 10, 11 and adults (GCSE and Functional Skills). I can also offer dyslexia support to any age group. I always carry out an assessment prior to teaching. This can be a mix of both verbal self assessment and more formal written assessments. This will form the basis of what and how I teach. I use interactive activities, lots of questioning and self appraisal. I usually give homework to help build independence in mastering new tasks and skills. Above all lots of encouragement and praise.
