A bit about Alice D

My undergrad was in linguistics and I'm currently studying MSc Linguistics, so it's safe to say I really love language! For me the most exciting thing about teaching is getting to share that love and passion with others. It's so wonderful to see someone connect the dots between the words on paper and the endless possibilities that being a confident and competent communicator can provide. I did a CELTA in 2015 which I really enjoyed and gave me my first proper taste of teaching. I taught in Hong Kong for nearly four years in schools and gave private one to one lessons for all kinds of students. I finished my Bachelors degree in Linguistics at the University of Sussex in 2023, first class. While I was studying I worked with community outreach programme Sussex Writes where I taught small classes for English lit students, mostly in the local area but some more remote online. Currently I am studying MSc Linguistics at the University of York. I think the most important thing about tutoring specifically is providing tailored help. The most important thing is to be able to provide students with the specific assistance they need. I also feel it's really important to demonstrate to students why what they are studying is important. Beyond just being able to pass an exam or get a good grade, strong communication skills are vital for success in both one's career and social life. When I was at school I had a handful of really inspiring, passionate teachers who really made me see why their subjects were so interesting. Despite their impact I never really thought I wanted to be a teacher myself (I always thought teachers were a bit boring!), but when I found myself at a bit of a crossroads my Mother suggested I do a CELTA course and learn to teach English. I was surprised by lots of things, not least how much of a challenge it was! But I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the challenge, it definitely wasn't boring. I realised that while some teachers not be the most exciting, it doesn't have to be that way. When I get to see students improve and start to be able to use their skills independently, it's the most exciting thing for me and it's what inspires me to keep on teaching. I really believe in guided discovery and student-led learning. That means my tutoring involves a lot of interaction, myself and my students asking each other questions and using practical skills to really get involved in learning strategy. This can mean responding to visual and written prompts, role playing situations for language practise, playing games or listening to music to help prompt and describe experiences. The best thing for me about this student-led, wide variety of activities means, very often, students end up teaching me something! As a life-long student myself it's so exciting to learn a new approach or way of seeing things, so I would say that's definitely my favourite thing!
