A bit about Nicola

I am a qualified English teacher with 12 years' experience. I have taught in England, the UAE, China, and Scotland. My students have ranged in age from 8 to 18, and have come from all walks of life. I have also taught History, Geography, mixed Humanities, and Citizenship to children aged 9 to 14. It is important that students make the most of the hour, so I believe in the importance of flipped learning. This is where the student completes some work prior to the session so that we can then progress together to the next level. For example, in prepping for the UKiset, I might ask a student to write their practice essay beforehand, so that we can mark it together in dialogue. Students have described me as funny and warm, which I think is accurate! It's important to me to build a good rapport with a student so that they feel comfortable in discussing their strengths and working on their weaknesses. Humour in a classroom also helps to break down barriers and make the material more relatable and memorable. I like the student to come to the session with some information under their belt already. That could mean pre-reading a poem we are going to look at, or revising a figurative language technique from previous study, or writing a paragraph about a topic we are exploring. Then, during the online session, we discuss what the student did in preparation, and build on the knowledge they have and/or plug the gaps that are revealed. For example, if I've asked the student to pre-read a poem, we're going to discuss their initial thoughts about the poem. Depending on what the student independently talks about, I might point them towards looking at language features if that's where they're falling short, or perhaps we might talk about the historical context of the poem. Interactivity in online learning is important. Using the Whiteboard feature on Sherpa helps the student and I to collaborate on mindmaps, text annotation, and collaborative paragraph writing.
