A bit about Tom

My scientific expertise centres around human health and disease. Throughout my integrated Master's degree in Biochemistry, I specialised heavily into cancer cell biology and immunology. Moreover, since graduating I have worked for some of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world (e.g. AstraZeneca), helping to develop new cancer medicines. As such, I am at the forefront of scientific research, and am an expert in my field. In terms of my tutoring expertise, I have 3 years (approx. 150 lessons) prior experience teaching GCSE and A-Level students in all aspects of Biology and Chemistry. I believe in a foundational approaching to teaching; that is not just teaching you the content, but explaining why things happen in the way they do. I find this helps students to retain information more easily, and ultimately reach their academic goals. In both my GCSE and A-Level exams, I achieved straight A*s (including in Biology and Chemistry). In my 4-year integrated Master's degree in Biochemistry (MBiochem), I came top of my year and was awarded a first-class honours (with distinction) by the University of York. Moreover, throughout my degree I won numerous academic prizes, the most notable of which was the Royal Society of Biology's 2023 'Top Student Award'. As a result, I am also an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Biology (AMRSB). My teaching style is entirely dependant on the student! I will change my teaching style to suit your individual needs. Personally, I am a visual learner, so I prefer to use diagrams and pictures when explaining content. However, if this does not work for a student (e.g. they learn textually), I have enough tutoring experience to adapt my teaching style to their needs. I also create tailored 'cheat-sheets' with the important points from each lesson for all of my students. A standard 1 hour lesson with me will be approximately 40 minutes of explaining the content, followed by 20 minutes of questions/problems for the student to solve.
