A bit about Laura

Qualified teacher experienced with in-person and online private tutoring, 1-1 and in small groups, for both children and adults. I offer detailed feedback after sessions, with notes on what we covered, how the student performed, what went well and which areas need improvement. I design all my own resources and ensure they are of the highest quality and accuracy, offering you and your child valuable work and revision materials in addition to personal tutoring. I also offer homework if requested, extending the learning and providing more value for money. I can tutor alongside what a student is learning in class; or, if preferred, I can tutor on a requested area of study depending on what is required. I am keen historian, and I always teach literature with respect to the proper historical context – I do not substitute this with fake history, ideology or modern misrepresentations. My tutees perform exceptionally well and relate to literature far more after engaging with real and relevant historical context! I offer tutoring in English across all stages and ability levels: pre-GSCE, GSCE and A-Level. Areas of expertise include: use of grammar (basic and advanced); creative writing skills (fiction and non-fiction); development of vocabulary; analysis of language choice by authors; analysis of character, theme and context in literary fiction; identification, use and analysis of literary devices and structural features; poetry analysis (anthology and unseen); in-depth analysis of set texts for GSCE and A-level specifications; essay writing; effective exam skills, tips and tricks; and more! PGCE in 11-18 Secondary English (Ofsted Outstanding); BA (Hons) in English Literature; A* in A-Level English Literature; A in A-Level English Language; A* GSCE English Literature Whether analysing language and literature for a GSCE qualification or for general development, the experience should - above all – be genuinely enjoyable. I encourage students to uncover the relevance of the author's message in their own lives, explore the practical applications of effectively combining words with rhetorical flourish, and appreciate the inherent beauty of the English language. Qualifications will be obtained with much more ease once love and appreciation for the subject matter is established, regardless of ability level. I gently yet regularly assess understanding, identify where students have difficulties and weaknesses, and explore ways to help them progress according to their specific needs. I prefer to give focused tutoring in specific areas which need improvement, while making sure the fundamentals of reading and writing continue to be developed. I can offer advice on how best to spend revision time at home, and my resources can be used to teach and learn at home in your own time. I am most familiar with tutoring to the AQA specifications for GSCE English Literature, and AQA/Edexcel for GSCE English Language; however, different exam boards often test many of the same skills and study many of the same texts. Please enquire, and we can discuss how I can offer help to those studying under other exam boards. I also offer tutoring to KS3 aged students (aged 11-14) to develop their skills in preparation for beginning GSCE study.
