A bit about James P

Hello! I am committed to maintaining a relaxed environment where genuine learning can prosper, and critical thinking is encouraged. I primarily drive learning through questioning tutees, and critically engaging with issues, rather than lecturing or delivering vast swathes of content, and then provide necessary resources to go through together to consolidate understanding. Importantly, I believe in an individualised approach to tutoring, where each tutee is supported to achieve their aims, whatever they may be. I achieved three A*s at A-Level in Politics, Economics, and Religious Studies, and 10 GCSES with seven Grade 9s, including English, RS, and History. I am studying HSPS at St. Johns College, Cambridge, and am focusing on international relations, particularly in relation to crisis and conflict. I have delivered a presentation on the Oxbridge application process to around 50 pupils, and created resources to guide them further after the presentation. I have an informal approach to tutoring, and have helped 3 pupils at my school to achieve strong A-Level grades in Religious Studies and Politics. I love helping people with personal statements and Oxbridge applications because its so rewarding to see true passion and interests come to blossom on a page. It's really rewarding to work with tutees to discover their passions and support them in exploring those niche areas more deeply. I helped several pupils at my school through the admissions process, particualrly with interview prep and personal statements and it's a real joy. Politics and RS are also deep interests of mine, and adopting a slightly Socratic method in tutoring facilitates true thought about the issues at hand, resulting in a far more comprehensive understanding. I teach AQA English Language GCSE, OCR Economics A-Level, Edexcel Politics A-Level, and Eduqas RS A-Level. I am very happy to adjust to different exam boards, and have experience at doing so. Politics is my specialism, and passion. I am reading HSPS (specialising in Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge) and really enjoying teaching it, whilst engaging in broader thematic discussions with tutees. I aim to make lessons as interactive as possible, by using the document and whiteboard function of Sherpa to test students' knowledge and comprehension in real time. My lessons normally consist of a quick test of the content previously covered to ensure knowledge retention and spaced learning, followed by a discussion of the content or techniques that are the focus of this lesson. This is both expositionary and interrogative, and combines some content delivery with eliciting responses from students to deliver a highly interactive, fun lesson!
