A bit about Peter R

Having travelled through all continents except Antarctica, I gained a first class degree in Geology at Glasgow University. I then went on to complete a PhD in Geology at Durham University which involved mapping Holocene volcanoes. I then received a scholarship from the Royal Geographical Society to train as a Geography teacher. Subsequently I achieved a PGCE, and was awarded a grade of "Outstanding" for my QTS. Since then I have taught A Level Geography and Environmental Science for 5 years in the classroom, field and lab. I also examine for AQA in Human Geography. Geography is an alive, evolving and relevant subject that engages people with the world they live in. Helping students to think critically about people, places and processes is a pleasure. I love using maps, media, diagrams, statistics and my travel experience to broaden people's horizons. Being part of a students' progress and attainment is incredibly rewarding. Lessons begin with a re-cap of content, linking back with students prior knowledge. A small handful of learning outcomes for the current lesson are then outlined. These are subsequently explored using a variety of resources such as maps, diagrams, statistics and media. Students then take time to formulate their ideas and apply their knowledge to a related, novel scenario. We wrap it up with a punchy summary to embed the knowledge! My degrees were in geology, looking at volcanoes, so my background is in physical geography. However, as an examiner I mark for human geography. This helps make sure my knowledge is as broad as possible. At A Level I teach both physical and human modules.
