A bit about Graham B

I am an experienced Chemistry teacher and tutor with over 15 years of teaching experience across all key stages in addition to industrial experience with a multi-national pharmaceutical company. My main passion is A-level Chemistry with a special interest in organic chemistry, and I have tutored many students both face-to-face as well as online. Having left secondary classroom teaching in 2011 to bring up my young family, I have worked as a part-time Chemistry tutor - the vast majority at A-level. Since then, I have tutored over 30 students on a 1:1 basis - all of which have had regular (normally weekly) lessons during their sixth-form education. This has been both face-to-face as well as online and more recently I have worked as a teaching assistant in a local primary school. This has enable me to broaden my teaching skills across a wide range of subjects as well as experience of different ages and abilities of students. I have found this extremely beneficial for A-level tuition as it enables me to adapt my teaching methods to best support the individual learner. In short, all aspects of A-level Chemistry! Whilst at the University of Southampton I developed a strong interest in organic chemistry, and as a result worked within the Chemical Research and Development department of a pharmaceutical company. This gave me an excellent insight into the practical applications of this area of chemistry as is a topic that still fascinates me to this day. However, since moving into teaching, I have found that the inorganic and physical components of the course are the parts that I can teach equally as effectively. Being aware of the challenges and pitfalls of the areas that I was less confident in enables me to empathise with the difficulties that students may have. The main focus of my lessons is the student answering past paper exam questions. In my experience this is by far the best way to identify gaps in the students knowledge as well as developing a strong exam technique. If a student is struggling with a particular area - either highlighted within a tutoring session or at the request of the student themselves - then the lesson can be tailored to have further teaching on this topic. Throughout the lesson, I will fill out a summary sheet detailing what the student answered well during a session as well as highlighting areas for the student to focus on in the future; be that either subject content or how the student answered a particular question. This provides an excellent resource for the student to refer back to after a tutoring session. I will also set homework for the student to complete, which they will need to complete after the tutoring session to consolidate their learning. Please note that my availability is during the normal school day and I do not have space to tutor during the evening or at weekends. Outside of teaching I like to carry out some voluntary work within our local community, as well as singing with a local choral society. I also enjoy running and regularly take part and volunteer at my local parkrun with my family and have recently completed a half-marathon.
