A bit about Blanca G

I was born in Madrid, Spain, where I studied two undergraduate degrees: Spanish Philology (Hispanic literature and Spanish linguistics) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, graduating top of my faculty, and English Philology at Spain's Open University (UNED). I came to the UK to study a Master of Philosophy in Comparative Literature at the University of Cambridge after which I worked organising teacher training programmes and teaching Spanish in Cambridge. Hoping to continue teaching and researching Spanish literature and language, I completed a PhD in Spanish, Latin American and Portuguese Studies at UCL. Recently, I also completed an MA in Spanish Teaching as a Second Language from Spain's Open University (UNED) and the Instituto Cervantes. I have been teaching Spanish language, literature, film, and history at UCL since 2020, first as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant, later as an Associate Lecturer, and now as a Lecturer. I especially have experience in teaching A-Level and GCSE exams, Spanish for University and Spanish for business. I enjoy using teaching techniques based on the use of creativity in the classroom and focused on the applicability of the language in a Spanish speaking environment. I also consider flexibility crucial and I always adapt the structure of my lessons to the needs of the student. For exam lessons, I tend to follow the same structure, adapting it to each student, which has led my former students to top results. Moreover, besides focusing on tips, techniques and grammar structures that helped students to achieve high grades, I always make sure that my students actually learn the language and are able to communicate in Spanish in different settings. For Spanish for University and other types of lessons, I usually come together with a series of lesson plans for the student depending on their needs and goals. These plans usually include teaching grammar, speaking practice, games and role-plays to fix the contents, among others. I am very flexible and always, always adapt to the student's interests and needs. I have received training in very varied pedagogies, teaching methodologies, and teaching-related issues: creativity in the classroom, gamification, the communicative approach, pastoral care, and so on, and I have come up with my own style through a combination of them. I always sympathise with my students and make sure I create a comfortable, safe space in the classroom where mistakes are welcome as a tool to learn and the student can set up their own pace. I dance salsa, sing in a choir, run in a running club, and read everything I can. I love travelling and good conversation. I'm absolutely passionate about food and I can argue for the delights of British cuisine.
