A bit about Cian K

I am a lead Latin tutor at a state secondary school in south London, where I also teach History at KS3 and teach a short course on classical civilisation at KS5 focusing on oracy and literacy. My GCSE cohort in 2023 achieved 9, 9 and 8. I studied English and Classical Studies at the University of Bristol, and went on to complete an MPhil in Classics there. As a result, I have also taught English language and literature. During my MPhil, I specialised in Ovid's poetry and James Joyce's works, looking specifically at exile and how that affects depictions of both the homeland and the writer in fictional work. More generally, my academic interest is in classical reception: examining how themes, ideas, values and stories have been translated and transformed in the millennia since they were first written down. I always begin with starter questions that test prior knowledge essential to understanding the new concept. When these are completed and any misconceptions have been identified, I move onto teaching, explaining and demystifying whatever it is we happen to be learning that lesson. I then ask questions to check for understanding. After teaching the content, I work through examples using an I do–we do–you do model, where support from me is gradually reduced. We consolidate the learning through independent practice, and usually finish with a plenary to give the lesson a sense of 'completeness' and to offer the student the opportunity to take stock of what they have learned. I strike an excellent balance between rigorously teaching Latin grammar and keeping things lighthearted, relatable and enjoyable.
