A bit about Eileen

My first degree is a joint honours degree in History and Sociology (2:1) from Lancaster University and I have a Masters degree in Sociology (from Southampton university) and a PhD in Sociology (from Salford University)and I have I have been a Senior lecturer and Associate Professor for 23 years at various Universities in UK, NZ and ROI and teaching Sociology and Social Policy modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels sinc3 2006. I have just retired from my full time post as an Assistant Professor at Northumbria University. Since 2018, I have taught 25 AS/A-Level students privately and have a 100% pass rate and a 93% rate of students attaining a level 5 or level for grade in both History and Sociology. I specialise in AS/A level History and Sociology with a partcular focus in developing exam techniques and linking these to the Learning objectives AO1-3 for both history and Sociology. I currently act as an Examiner for AQA at A-Level. I have extensive experience in the design and delivery of online courses (further developed by teaching degree courses online between 2020-2022) and an excellent understand of both pedagogy and andragogy and in particular designing and tailoring individual lesson/lecture plans to enable 16-18 year olds make the transition from pedagogical (child centred) to andragogical (adult-centred learning) to enable them to become more proactive about their learning so to make the transition from studying at A level to Level 4 at degree level. My teaching style and the structure of my lessons are based on 23 years of blended learning and the last three years of online teaching to students at a level coma undergraduate and postgraduate level. This is augmented with a thorough underpinning knowledge of the vast body of international research on the challenges of online learning including the work of Petrovitch and Pale 2015; Boas et al 2020 and Cuerdo-Vilas and Nunas (2021). Much of this research identifies that online learning requires regular rest breaks, because no matter how academically able students are or how interesting the material is, after 35 to 40 minutes a student's concentration span wanes and they find it difficult to retain a critical understanding of the material at the same level as they did in the first half an hour. This is particularly the case when students are learning online which requires more structure. Therefore in a one-hour lesson I break the session down into 4x 15-minute segments where a teach for ten minutes and then for five minutes get the students to undertake a short activity e.g. a quiz, or problem-solving activity and link these to learning outcomes of the particular course. I also give the student homework in the form of a reflective learning journal to identify what the have learnt in the session, and how that too relates to the A-Level learning objectives A01-A03 for history and sociology. I have been teaching/tutoring since 2000 specialising in the subject areas of History, Sociology, and Social policy At UG and PG level and teaching AS/A level students as a private tutor, since 2018. Prior to that I also tutored A-Level English Literature to students from 1984-1989. I have a 1005 pass rate in these subject and a 93% success rate of my students attaining a Level 4 or 5 grade in the exam.
