A bit about Sarah W

I am an English Language and Linguistics BA (Hons) graduate with 5 years' teaching experience in an English secondary school (KS3-KS5). Prior to this, I completed a CELTA course (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) earning a Pass B and have experience in teaching English as a second/additional language in Nepal, Belgium and England. I have expertise in Linguistics, English Language (KS3 to A Level), English Literature (KS3 to GCSE), EFL/ESOL/EAL. I have extensive knowledge of the following GCSE Literature texts: A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens, Macbeth - Shakespeare, An Inspector Calls - J.B Priestley, and the Power and Conflict poetry cluster I have experience in teaching GCSE English Language and Literature as well as A-Level English Language in conjunction with the AQA exam board. I also have experience as an AQA examiner for A-Level English Language, specialising in Paper 1, but with experience teaching Paper 2 and a deep understanding of the required components of the A Level course including the NEA component (coursework). I have achieved a First Class Honours degree in English Language and Linguistics, a PGDE Secondary - Teach First (11-16 with Post-16 Enhancement), a CELTA pass B (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). In GCSE English Literature and Language, I achieved an A* and an A respectively, as well as an A* in A-Level English Literature. As an A-Level English Language teacher, I have helped students who were predicted D and E grades achieve well above their targets and predictions and instead achieving between A-C grades. Lessons will be adapted to student need, but will usually follow a 'test, teach, test' approach to identify areas that require development. I prefer to use quizzing to begin with to check for understanding, followed by input (vocabulary, exam technique, a specific focus on an exam question, etc - depending on the subject/topic required), followed by a final 'test' stage to assess learning. Feedback may also be given either on a lesson-by-lesson basis or after a longer piece of work has been completed and sent to me. This feedback will be used to plan future lessons.
