A bit about Sylvia A

I am a medical doctor (MBChB), with an additional 1st class Bachelor's (Hons) degree in Medical Sciences (Immunology). I also have 5 years experience in tutoring pupils between ages 7-18. I aspire to continue to teach/guide others throughout my career. I have a strong background in Biology (including Human Biology) up to higher education level. Competent in AQA, Edexcel and OCR exam boards. Experience and a background in Geography from KS3 to A-level, specifically in Edexcel and AQA. Having two degrees and graduating from medical school, i have a lot of experience with UCAS, the UKCAT and the university application process. I always start by establishing my pupil's prior knowledge, and straightening out any kinks in this foundation. Then we add new information, relevant to the required curriculum. Over time, we will continue to revisit subjects in a spiral curriculum format, in order to consolidate learning and understanding. I tend to incorporate short pop quizzes to check understanding, and have past paper style practice intermittently. I first started tutoring in 2017, during my Immunology degree. Since then, I have taught pupils in all stages of secondary school and 6th form years to improve grades and excel in their desired subject. I find that when people truly understand a concept or principle, they are more likely to develop an interest in the subject beyond their curriculum. They start to enjoy learning about the subject, and that is gratifying for me. I adopt a spiral curriculum approach to teaching. This is where there is intermittent revisiting of a topic, with a view to build upon and consolidate prior learning. When my pupils realise that "Oh! That wasn't actually that difficult", or when they are able to teach me a subject they were initially nervous about learning. Understanding is more important than memorising. Once you truly understand, you can teach. I tend to always start by checking in with my student. Touch base on how they are performing and where they feel they need more focus. I helped my student go from an E (2) to a B (6) in her GCSE Biology exams. I guided an A Level student in her UCAS application for medical school, through personal statement prep, UKCAT and UCAS prep. She is now in her 2nd year at medical school. MBChB Medicine BSc (Hons) Medical Science Immunology A-Level Biology A-Level Geography A-Level Chemistry Since primary school, i have always had one or two teachers at each stage of my education, who i think played a huge role in me developing into the adult i am today. I would love to make that difference in someone else life.
