A bit about Nikhil G

Hi, I'm Nik, a final year student at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Politics and International Relations. I've been a tutor for around 4 years now, teaching mostly English, Politics and History. I took English at GCSE, and then both English and Politics at IB higher level, gaining top marks in each. I have a real passion for these subjects, and bring detailed lesson plans and an individual approach to teaching. I'm excited to help you to improve and reach your academic potential! Having achieved top levels in GCSE English (9), alongside getting 43/45 in International Baccalaureate, including top marks (7) in English and Politics, I now am in my final year at the University of Cambridge, studying Politics and International Relations at St John's College. With this, I have specialised in one on one tutoring of History, English and Politics from GCSE through to IB and A level standards for almost 4 years. I first started tutoring whilst in year 13, teaching students one on one for GCSE Maths English, Science, History and Geography. Although I don't teach such a broad range now, I still teach all the way from pre- GCSE to A-Level and IB. The most important part of teaching for me, is understanding the specific needs and focuses of the student. I like to take a lesson to first establish the students goals, needs and academic requirements, and then to tailor a specific teaching and lesson plan to them. In lessons, I like to alternate between teaching and engaging with new content, and also reviewing and improving upon the students own work. Through this, I have developed an effective and personalised way to teach and engage students with new and complex content and academic strategies. My lessons begin with an overview of the goals and objectives of the hour. This would include the content to be convered, along with any specific academic techniques or writing styles that we will be looking at. From then, we will either get straight into understanding content, and how to apply it, or if the student has written any pieces for the lesson, we can together to go through it, and find areas for improvement. I prefer to engage with students when learning content, understanding how to apply it in exams and in wider understandings of literature, politics or history, rather than just dumping information, as is often done at schools. My teaching philosophy is grounded in fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of subject matter. I believe in tailoring my teaching approach to each student's unique learning style and pace, recognizing that individuals absorb and process information differently. I prioritise clear communication and the articulation of complex concepts in an accessible manner, striving to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications to enhance relevance and engagement. Collaboration is key, so I encourage active participation and open dialogue in my sessions, allowing students to share their perspectives, question assumptions, and explore ideas freely. This not only aids in solidifying their understanding, but also fosters a sense of ownership and excitement about the learning process. My favorite aspect of teaching is witnessing the moment a student experiences a breakthrough in understanding. It's incredibly rewarding to see the concepts click into place for them, and seeing not just the acquisition of knowledge but also a boost in confidence and curiosity. This moment reflects the impact of learning and teaching, and it motivates me to continue developing my methods to inspire and support every student's learning journey. I gained grade five grade 9 and five grade 8 marks at GCSE, alongside achieving 43/45 at International Baccalaureate, placing me in the top 8% of students globally. Now, I am studying for a MA (Cantab) in Human, Social and Political Science, specialising in Politics and International Relations.
