A bit about Menelaos M

I have always been fascinated by Science. I completed my secondary education in one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Cyprus. I then went on to complete a BSc in Biological Sciences with honors on the University of Edinburgh, as well as an MSc in Oncology from the University of Nottingham. I have received my teacher training from King's College London, pioneers in the field of education and I am currently working at one of the top ranking secondary schools of the UK. My specialty is in Biology. I am very confident in teaching any level of the subject from KS3 up to A-level. My understanding of the subject is immense, as I have studied it extensively during my BSc and MSc. This specialism comes with hands-on experience working in genetics, but also oncology labs in the UK and abroad. These experiences enable me to be passionate and effective when educating young people. My lessons usually involve retrieval practice, to gauge the level of understanding of my students. This will inform how the rest of the lesson will carry on. There is always input from me during the introduction of new material, but I also make sure to involve the students in this during guided practice tasks. Assessment for learning, or AfL is essential during the lesson to always track how the students are understanding the information and eliminate any misconceptions. The plenary will usually be a task for the students to consolidate understanding and make the most out of the lesson. I have been educating young people since 2017. When I first started, I was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Cyprus national guard where I was responsible for the training of new recruits fresh out of secondary school. I later went on to lead sessions in a peer assisted learning scheme at university, where, in my final year I also became the president of that scheme. More recently I have been teaching primary school pupils in summer school. Currently I am a science teacher in a secondary school in the UK. I love how much detail there is in biology. It is such a detailed subject and new things get discovered every year. There is always something for everyone to find interesting and engaging. Biology is all around us and it is a great privilege to be able to comprehend that and explore it with young inquisitive minds! I would describe my teaching style as assertive, but engaging. I only ask for eagerness and motivation from my students. These are the traits that drive learning forward, when the environment in the classroom is one of exploration of thirst for knowledge and I believe assertiveness and confidence in my subject knowledge allows me to do that. 'The goal is not to get the answer, but to be able to know how to get to the answer.' Anyone can search for an answer online, or flip through a book. But true mastery, true learning, comes from being able to apply what you know to get to an answer. I think this does not only apply to teaching and learning, but it also applies to everyday life, strong foundations are what drive us forward. I am currently teaching AQA to my yr7-yr10 and Edexcel to my yr11. But I am very confident with yr12 and yr13 as well! Multiple classes in each year group made me experienced with differentiating my teaching to fit each class and each pupil. I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE from King's College London. I have completed all 3 science subjects as A-levels. In university I have completed a BSc in Biological sciences with honors in development regeneration and stem cells. I have also completed an MSc(with merit) in Oncology .
