A bit about Sandra W

I am a chartered mathematician and have 26 years of teaching experience teaching across the secondary age and ability range including A-Level. I have an in-depth understanding of the pedagogy of teaching mathematics across this range. I have experience of delivering individual and group lessons online and know how to design lessons to engage and motivate students. I understand how to structure sessions to gain the best out of my students. I have the experience and knowledge to identify the specific topics that students find challenging. I then target these areas to develop deep sustainable understanding, building on what students can already do. I am an experienced online tutor using different platforms and can adapt how I present these sessions to suit the needs and learning styles of different students. I am a chartered mathematician and an experienced Mathematics teacher and adviser with 25 years’ experience teaching and tutoring and I have an enhanced DBS. I have a Mathematics degree and a PGCE in mathematics education from Bristol University and a Masters degree from Bristol University. I am also a mathematics subject expert for The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) which regulates examinations and assessments in England. I have taught across the full secondary age and ability range, including GCSE, IGCSE, As and A Level mathematics. I have worked at national level to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. I have a deep understanding of the pedagogy of teaching mathematics and how to support and challenge students at all levels to achieve their best. I have experience working with shy and nervous students and can help them overcome any fear of mathematics that they may have. I can also challenge students aiming for higher grades. As mathematics educators we need to foster commitment to mathematics learning with a view to increasing participation and raising awareness of the opportunities that studying mathematics can provide, both within and beyond STEM subjects. We need to exploit the opportunities to make the mathematics learning stimulating and raise expectations for all. This enthusiasm and interest in mathematics needs to be built throughout a student’s education starting in KS3 and below. The combination of passion for my subject and deep understanding of the subject pedagogy required to teach mathematics effectively, alongside my wider skill set, means I would be able to identify and target the needs of individual students. I have worked with teams that can demonstrate significant impact on the understanding of mathematics teaching and learning I have experience of delivering lessons online and know how to design these to engage and motivate student. I can also use my extensive experience of teaching mathematics to identify and target students misunderstanding and misconceptions. I have extensive experience of the education system in the UK and abroad. I have delivered training to mathematics teachers in China and Pakistan. I have also delivered training to STEM teachers in Morocco and Columbia. I can draw on a wealth of resources that I have accumulated over the years and would be able to use these and my experience in schools to support my students to achieve their potential.
