A bit about Eleni B

I started tutoring in 2016 as I believe that it's a rewarding and flexible job where I could make a positive influence in students' lives. It has undoubtedly reinforced my teaching skills and techniques as I have been exposed to a plethora of learning styles. I wholeheartedly believe that tutoring doesn't only help students develop, mentally and academically, but also helps me to develop as an educator. I hold a BA in English Language and Literature. I am currently tutoring KS3/ KS4 English Language and Literature. I am also completing my Master's thesis, having studied Gender, Violence and Conflict at the University of Sussex. My dissertation investigates gender bias in GCSE English Literature curriculum, and as such my specialisation is on Gender and Literature. I have worked closely and supported students who were diagnosed with Autism (ASC) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), exhibiting a plethora of symptoms such as, short attention span, lack of empathy or inability to read social cues, inability to stay still and quiet and have difficulty concentrating on a task due to sensory overload, has proven a fruitful and instructive experience for it allowed me to explore a variety of strategies to help my students cope within the classroom environment. My name is Eleni and I come from Greece. I began my teaching career in 2016 and I have been involved in education ever since. For the last two years I have been living, working and studying in Brighton, UK. I am an avid reader with an intellectual curiosity for feminist and gender conceptual frameworks. My academic objective is to further deepen and solidify my knowledge and perspective on gender and feminist studies and that is why, my current area of academic focus and postgraduate research is on Gender, Violence and Conflict at Sussex University. My thesis, focuses on gender bias and stereotyping within GCSE Literature and teachers’ perspectives and pedagogical approaches to tacking the issue. I consider myself to be outgoing, and enthusiastic about my work and students have always responded well to this by showing me respect, and by being attentive during our lessons. I see myself as a teacher-mentor who becomes a source of knowledge to be tapped into thereby promoting students' autonomy and welfare. Establishing rapport and generating motivation among students are the two fundamental pillars which define my teaching philosophy and are based on the creation of an honest and safe environment that is founded on mutual trust, respect and collaboration. I have taught students coming from different socio-economic, cultural and professional backgrounds, some of them with learning difficulties, like dyslexia, and as such, I strive to demonstrate cultural and social sensitivity both in and out of my classroom by allowing diversity to flourish in a welcoming environment as I try to encourage the birth of new, innovative thinking. Being more aware of the different learning needs, abilities and interests of my learners allows me to accomplish targeted teaching outcomes as well as anticipate and tackle with potential learning difficulties. My teaching experience permits me to acknowledge that this can be best achieved through individualised instruction and thorough analysis of the students’ learning profiles and potential language development and linguistic difficulties. Also, guidance, discipline, attentive supervision and instructive feedback both from the teacher as well as self-reflective evaluation from the students themselves should be implemented in the teaching plan.
