A bit about Amanda D

I taught science, IGCSE/GCSE Physics and Biology, and A level Biology during my 25 year teaching career. I am now retired and enjoy hillwalking, conservation work and being involved in my local community. Biology and Physics from Common Entrance to I/GCSE My perfect lesson starts with a interesting example of the concept in action. Physics; Formulae and units stated, with questions to help their use and memorisation. Diagrams and bullet pointed explanations to ensure full answers. Increasingly complex questions to demonstrate understanding. Biology; Diagrams with new terminology and functions given with tips to aid memorisation. Stepwise explanations of increasing complexity to guide understanding and full marks on exam papers. I love the breakthrough moments when understanding appears like a lit light bulb. Never give up. Incentive and enjoyment are key factors in learning so an element of fun needs to be included - easily done in Science! Making it fun and accessible. Lots of practical work and quirky examples. Where the subject is a little dry I include terrible jokes! Making extremely advanced pupils brim over with excitement during an off-syllabus lesson on quantum particles whilst not losing the rest of the class, or myself! Seeing struggling pupils gain the grades needed to move onto the next stage in their education. I have an upper second honours degree in Applied Biology from Thames Polytechnic. I have a PGCE in science from Liverpool University. The best and worst teachers who taught me made me think about process and I loved school. I always wanted to be a teacher. I love hillwalking, campervan holidays, live music and crochet (blame lockdown!). I am treasurer of our village hall and a volunteer carer for the elderly in the village. I have experience of the following examination boards: AQA, OCR, JMB and Cambridge.
