A bit about Elliot F

Hi! I am a PhD student studying Chemistry at Durham University. I also have a masters in chemistry and I have previously worked in the scientific research industry for almost three years. I'm professional, experienced, and passionate about teaching, something I do regularly as a PhD. I mainly specialise in Chemistry up to A-level. However, I am confident in Physics and Mathematics at GCSE level. I have first hand experience teaching in a classroom environment from both my time as a PhD and in my younger years as an Air Cadet. An initial consultation will gauge how best to tailor your tutoring sessions going forward, but a typical session will entail a mix of past papers, practice questions, and discussing tricky concepts in greater detail. High-grades in GCSEs and A-levels are best achieved by understanding model answers, therefore the divide will likely be roughly 40:40:20, respectively, but this might change based on goals and needs. I have tutored multiple times in my life. First at A-level when I tutored Maths in the local community. Then again during my undergraduate degree. Chemistry is a fascinating topic and many people get drawn in by the extravagant practical demonstrations, myself included. However, I think what makes a subject like a science truly interesting is what links it to our every day lives, such as the oil industry, detergents and soaps, atmospheric chemistry, and medicines. When it comes to teaching topics in science, I find the best way to contextualise a concept is to find an analogy that can be related to things we experience in our day to day lives. Tutoring is a very rewarding job as you get to see your impact as a teacher on a students progression, all while discussing your favourite subjects. The quality of the teacher can shape what a person might or might not study later on in life, so it is important to be passionate, understanding, and knowledgeable. MRes and BSc in chemistry from the University of Nottingham. Current PhD student at Durham University. Instructor qualification from the ATC at 18 years old. Two time demonstrator in undergraduate labs. Outside of PhD life, I play electric guitar, I occasionally go bouldering, I like to go hiking especially in the national parks, I learn new languages (currently German), and I play video/board games with my friends. I teach Chemistry from years 7-13, and Physics and Maths from years 7-11. Any exam board is OK, just let me know which one you are on in our first contact/session.
