A bit about Simon X

I teach the subjects I love: English and maths. I help students build confidence with KS3, GCSE and in preparation for the 11-Plus entry exams. I came to tutoring later in life, five years ago. Before this, I had built a 25-year career working in marketing, after graduating with a BA(Hons) in Performing Arts (Drama). I am also a theatre critic and run my own marketing consultancy and copywriting business. Though there will be many tutors with more teaching experience, I think that not spending my life working in education is a positive thing for students. I'm able to bring a real-life perspective to the subjects that's not just taken from a textbook. I can contextualise learning and explain the value of topics far beyond how to answer an exam question. My students appreciate me talking to them like a person who has lived a life outside of a classroom. I teach with the aim of making knowledge intrinsic. I see English and Maths as more important than just subjects to be learnt for an exam and then forgotten. I put topics in context with an approach that is informal. I encourage conversation and never underestimate the importance of laughter during lessons. Lessons are structured, but the pace taken adapts to suit each student, giving each session an individual approach in a recognisable format. I teach English Language and Maths, at KS3 and GCSE. I believe having a strong foundation in these key subjects builds confidence that helps with all other lessons. I think studying English Language and Maths is like doing a gym workout for your mind. A good session helps keep your brain fit for the challenges of the day. I began tutoring GCSE English Language and maths to help students work through the enforced lockdowns during Covid. When things normalised, I took on more pupils and developed exam-board agnostic lesson programmes for each subject. I also spend time as a volunteer tutor for a charity working with disadavantaged children, aiming to tackle the attainment gap. The charity awarded me Volunteer Tutor of the Year for my lesson content and approach. I can work on specific areas of concern you may have in English Language or Maths, such as tricky homework questions if required. For more general support in the subjects, I have developed lesson programmes that cover all key topics. Working through these helps to build confidence and provides a strong grounding for the exams and beyond. Maths covers the pathway topics that help pupils become mathematically fluent and able to access many other topics in the curriculum. English includes comprehension, critical evaluation, and creative writing. Both programmes have been created around the DofE’s Assessment Objectives. Though the programmes are exam-board agnostic, I incorporate questions from AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. I also pull from a bank of past papers from all exam boards.
