A bit about Jacob

Hi I'm Jacob a 2nd Year Medical Bio-sciences student at Imperial college London. I have been tutoring for the past 4 years in Biology, Chemistry and Maths at GCSE and A-Level. I very keen to help students improve and succeed in their studies because. When I was at school I myself was at a point where my grades weren’t where they needed to be, but I am evidence that hard work always prevails. During Year 12 I had grades of CCD, but through hard work I managed to improve those to AAB, getting into Imperial College London, with the methods that I use with my students. I specialise in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, more specifically AQA Biology and Chemistry as well as Edexcel Maths. I achieved Silver on the Chemistry Olympiad during my final year of sixth form (one point off gold but who's counting?). My main strength is to help lower-grading students increase their grade by reinforcing the basics, whilst teaching in a way tailored to them. First, we would start with a quick conversation about anything from their class work which may be causing any confusion. Then we would begin the topic of interest for that particular session, which can be decided on the day or prearranged at the student's discretion. This would involve either PowerPoints or in-session notes created by myself and the student, before progressing on to some exam-style questions to consolidate the session. Then optionally I can provide some outside of session materials for the student to use. I first started tutoring in year 10. I attended a lower performing UK state school, so started by teaching my friends and classmates on topics they struggled with during class. I then progressed on to working with students across the academy to help them understand and develop their academic ability. From my A Levels I have an A in AQA Chemistry, an A in Edexcel Maths, and a B in AQA Biology. At GCSE I scored 999997776 D2* with 9s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Physics and French. I enjoy seeing the progression students have as their understanding of a topic grows. Each subject I teach has its own parts that are enjoyable; for Maths I love seeing the students closing in on the correct answer after starting from not understanding how to start the question. For chemistry, i love seeing how students interpret everything because Chemistry has so many different avenues and approaches that lead to the same answer. And finally for Biology, i love seeing students begin to understand how things work biologically and then they can start applying their understanding to other aspects of the course to improve further My teaching style is very relaxed and at the pace of the student. I will be very flexible on how they approach questions and their methods. My style is to teach them the basics of everything, allowing them to slowly gain confidence to step up and attempt more difficult topics. I will also introduce more advanced techniques to see if they benefit the student and talk about some off-specification topics to broaden the student's understanding. I enjoy helping sstudents succeed, watching them trying to improve, which is the reason I became a tutor in the first place. I’ve been in the situation where I needed a tutor and it helped and motivated me so much because I could see improvement. Hopefully if you chose to work with me, you’ll see that same improvement My greatest success with tutoring was being known across my school as someone to come to for help and support on any topic or subject. I have been able to push students from D grades to A’s after working with them. I just want to be able to help people like my tutors helped me so that’s the biggest success one could ask for. AQA - GCSE Biology+ GCSE Chemistry, A-Level Biology + A-Level Chemistry Edexcel- GCSE + A-Level Maths OCR- GCSE Maths All year groups Students enjoy the laid back nature of our sessions because I know that after a long day of school, you don’t want to feel like you’ve got another class to do, but rather a session with your tutor to help you understand the topics that may have been an issue earlier My interests are basketball, football (I am a Man United fan, please send help), snooker and golf.
