A bit about Annie H

I am a fully qualified English teacher with a PGCE from the University of Oxford. I have been a GCSE subject lead, and have exam board training on supporting students with exam technique. I have extensive training in working with students with SEND and a proven track record in supporting these students with engagement and achievement. My exam board specialties are AQA for GCSE English Language and Literature and Pearson Edexcel for A Level Literature. My specialist texts are Frankenstein, the Handmaid's Tale, Jekyll and Hyde, Macbeth, an Inspector Calls, the AQA poetry anthologies. I have valuable experience guiding students with their A Level coursework choices. I have a four year degree in English Literature from Trinity College Dublin, a Master's degree in Information Science, and a PGCE in English from the University of Oxford. I have worked in independent and state schools, both at primary and secondary level. I have been KS4 lead, and have undertaken exam board training. - KS2: Year 5 and 6 - KS3: Years 7, 8 and 9 - GCSE Language and Literature: all exam boards but specialising in AQA - A-Level Literature: all exam boards but specialising in Edexcel I am calm, patient and positive, pushing every student to the best of their ability in a safe and supportive environment. I like to draw from a range of sources to create lessons, and I believe the best sessions are a dialogue between tutor and student, where the learning is directed by the student's needs, rather than a prescriptive pre-planned lesson. My lessons are based on the individual needs of my students, as I feel we work with more purpose when we share a common goal. Lessons can be geared towards specific skills, like exam technique, but generally they involve a session of discussion and analysis, followed by independent writing with detailed feedback. I take pride in finding a point of engagement in English with every student! I have a particular interest in students with SEND and some of my biggest successes have been helping students to overcome barriers to their learning through working to their learning style, seeing their preferred approach as a strength. Outside of teaching, I love hiking, cooking, learning new languages and travelling to new places after living and working in Vietnam for three years.
