A bit about Ros N

Seeing a child develop enthusiasm for a subject that most people are afraid of brings me great joy. I enjoy interacting with student. Showing them the true beauty of the subject as well as its usefulness is extremely gratifying. There’s no job in the world I’d rather do. Hearing about former students achieving their goals is the most rewarding experience I could hope for. I find students understand mathematics better through a series of questions, answers and gentle hints. This makes it easier for the child to relate maths to the real world. After that I focus on persuading the child to express their methods and thought processes clearly which also helps their vocabulary and logical reasoning. I never berate a child for mathematical mistakes and try to keep lessons focused but light in mood. After winning several mathematics awards at school I went on to do a mathematics degree at Warwick. I achieved a 1st class and moved on to Imperial College to complete a PhD in Algebra. I started tutoring privately during my first degree, assisted classes, and supervised small groups. I continued this through my PhD then moved straight into teaching in London schools. I obtained my GTQ in 2011. I have around 8 years of classroom teaching experience and close to 20 years one to one private teaching experience. I am a keen bridge player, a very keen cook and have a growing interest in linguistics. I am a big follower of musical theatre and classical theatre. I am also particularly fond of science fiction, puzzle solving games and cryptic crosswords. I always try to treat my students as peers although younger and less experienced. I always try to include them in a lesson and make up stories about how a mathematical situation might appear in their lives. I will always try to reason with them if they exhibit bad behaviour before giving out punishments.
