Sherpa's Summary

Ed is a friendly and experienced tutor of Maths and Further Maths at GCSE and A Level. He specialises in Algebra, Calculus and Mechanics, and can tutor any exam board. Ed is keen for his students to focus on areas they find most challenging and he ensures that they fully understand each topic before moving onto the next one. He helps his students to explore different ways of thinking about a question, building a deeper understanding that enables them to better recall knowledge under exam conditi

A bit about Ed B

I`m Ed, an enthusiastic engineer and programmer with a passion for computational modelling and simulation. I graduated with first-class honours in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester, where I achieved stellar grades. Currently, I work at Rolls-Royce Defence as an engineer, validating computer software while also developing physics-based codes to be run on a supercomputer. This October, I will be relocating to Cambridge to pursue the MPhil in Scientific Computing, exploring the mathematical techniques and algorithms used to model continuous matter (such as air and water). I will be a member of Clare Hall, where I was awarded a scholarship for my outstanding undergraduate performance. My future aspiration is to pursue a PhD, researching the use of machine learning and/or innovative alternatives to traditional engineering simulation. My specialist areas include algebra, calculus, mechanics, and numerical methods. With strong roots in engineering, I enjoy bridging the gap between school and the real world by providing additional context on how these concepts are utilised. My tutoring style aims to foster independence and critical thinking. Mathematics, perhaps more so than other subjects, requires repeated practice of methods and techniques. Therefore, I encourage my students to find and bring their own practise material to cover during sessions, typically focusing on areas they find challenging. This responsibility improves engagement, provides a greater sense of satisfaction, and develops crucial skills required for self-study and revision. For each problem, I ask my students to explain their methods, ensuring they fully understand each step and its importance. I rarely simply give away the answer; instead I help my students explore different ways of thinking about the question, building a deeper understanding that enables them to better recall knowledge under exam conditions. I first started tutoring in 2021, assisting my younger cousin with his maths. I soon developed a passion for teaching and it has become an integral part of my life ever since. I have worked with various companies and agencies over the past 3 years, delivering over 1000 lessons to more than 30 students. I teach GCSE and A-level (Year 10 - Year 13). I personally studied Edexcel maths at GCSE, and OCR B (MEI) for Maths and Further Maths A-level. However, I am able to teach any exam board and have additional experience with AQA, OCR A, and Edexcel iGCSE. I hold a first-class BEng degree with honours (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Manchester. Engineering is a highly numerate discipline, covering areas such as fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, mathematical modelling/simulation, and solid mechanics. As a result, I have a comprehensive understanding of applied mathematics. I am also in the process of obtaining my Master's degree (Master of Philosophy in Scientific Computing) from the University of Cambridge. This qualification focuses on the numerical methods and mathematical algorithms that are used to solve complex sets of equations through computer programming.
