A bit about Stewart M

I am a fully qualified teacher of A Level Physics, Maths & Science + KS4 and KS3. I am the Head of Physics at an oversubscribed outstanding school in Essex and have taught KS3, KS4 and KS5 extensively in sought after schools since 2010. A specialist Physics teacher, I have expertise in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Computer Science, Law and Engineering. My previous experience has been in Engineering and Management Training. I have also successfully tutored students at all levels including the 11 Plus examination for Grammar schools. I aim to encourage students in all areas of their development and my primary role will be to support the classroom teaching that they are receiving. A specialist Physics teacher, I tutor A Level Physics, Maths & Science + KS3 and GCSE. I also have expertise in the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Computer Science, Law and Engineering. I have successfully tutored students at all levels, including the 11 Plus examination for Grammar schools. Just like when you go to the gym, you don't go straight to the heaviest weights, in our lessons we begin by loosening the grey matter with some previous work or questions related to the topic we have been working on. We then do a bit of teaching and explanation with plenty of opportunities for you to practise and ask questions. We then tend to do some exam style questions of the type you will sit in the examination room. I encourage my students to find questions that they get stuck on to start the lesson with and that way we can address the knowledge or understanding directly. I first began tutoring about ten years ago when I was at a school in Upminster, Essex. The headteacher's son was studying Physics and needed some help and it spiralled from there. I have recently had quite a few of my A Level students complete year thirteen, some of whom I have tutored since Y8 and I therefore now have space to replace those. I really enjoy tutoring, which you will see if we have lessons together. I really love it when a student gains confidence. Sometimes that's all it is, and it is very satisfying to see students achieve their goals - whether it be achieving a B to get into University or an A* to get to Oxford. I am a Socratic teacher which means I encourage you to develop the answers by careful guidance and questioning. Sometimes I also explain a method, then show you, then get you to repeat with me, guide me through some worked examples then you do some worked examples and before long you'll find yourself doing it on your own. We then tend to start the next lesson with some practice and if you've got it we move on. On a regular basis we will just go over some of the topics you haven't visited for a while just to ensure that you still get it..... I enjoy the chance to fully explain and give instant feedback to a student in a way that is impossible in large groups. The more a student is encouraged to think and explore their understanding the more independent they will become, but sometimes you just need that explanation from an expert just to make the correct connection. I like to offer individualized learning tailored to a student's needs. I also like to build confidence by creating a safe space where students are comfortable asking questions. We don't just memorize - I like to encourage students to understand the concepts, especially the abstract. My lessons are interactive with students regularly problem solving. I also like to bridge the gap between theory and application giving real life scenarios or discussing the history of how ideas came about. Regular assessment and feedback are important and I do this in each lesson celebrating our progress and encouraging remedial steps needed. I will also highlight areas for constructive feedback with detailed specific suggestions for growth. Students love the active engagement which allows critical thinking and feel that they are participating in their learning. They love the safe space created where they can explore their misconceptions and where mistakes are encouraged as an indication of learning. They love the depth and breadth to their lessons with lots of real life experiences included andthe ability to make connections allowing them to see the big picture. Aerospace Engineer 01/08/2024 Shon was failing his A Level Physics in his Y12 mock, but his ambition was to become an aerospace engineer and he needed to get a good grade in his A Level Physics. We began by analysing his strengths and and weaknesses and highlighted areas where he was less confident. We then set out a plan to push his grades up starting off with discussions about the topics where he needed help most. We then set short term, medium term and long term goals with checkpoints to assess where we were. As our lessons progressed Shon's confidence grew and eventually he became more and more independent as a learner. For example, in our early lessons I was doing the prompting and encouraging but later he was asking questions about work he was undertaking independently. By the time the exam came around, we were confident he would succeed and he eventually gained a 'B' grade. This allowed him to enter his University course and he is now a successful engineer working for BAE Systems. I have a PGCE in secondary Physics and Maths from IOE (Part of UCL). I have a BSc (Hons) in Physics and a BSc in Natural Sciences. I have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have completed NQT year. I have studied a Master's in Education (MEd) I was previously an Engineer and tried teaching through a Scheme arranged by the IOE and that gave me the ability to use my knowledge and experience to help students understand difficult concepts. I love that moment when students just click and say I get it. I love computer science and the technical aspects of computing. I Build computers and use Unreal Engine 5 to make VR 3D models and assets for Educational purposes. I teach all exam boards, I have literally taught them all at some stage. I hve had studens from year 6 in primary through to adults struggling a bit at university. If I was to provide a focus, I would say that A level Maths and Phsyics are my favourites to teach, although I enjoy all my subjects. AQA, OCR A, Edexcel, WJEC and Cambridge Pre U among others.
