A bit about Mahima C

Hi there! I am a final year Geography student studying at the University of Bristol offering Geography and Spanish tutoring. I have always been interested in languages, and even taught myself Spanish as an additional GCSE, so have a very detailed knowledge of the new GCSE and A level curricula. I continued learning it up until my year abroad last year in Valencia, which has rounded off my Spanish studies, making me fluent. I also studied geography while I was over there, which has given me a different perspective on geographical topics, especially political ones concerning the EU for example, as I studied Geography of Europe while I was there. I have been tutoring touch typing for the past two and a half years, specialising in students with specific learning difficulties. I give online lessons, as well as giving email feedbacks every week. I have also taught in person when I was in sixth form, giving additional help to younger students in geography, Spanish and German. Since I learnt the GCSE Spanish curricula on my own, I really enjoy teaching it to others as I know tricks and techniques that worked for me. I also taught some Spanish to other ERASMUS students during my year abroad in Valencia. I think that they found it easier to learn being taught by someone whose native language is English but has also learnt Spanish. Having taught many students with specific learning difficulties as well as a range of ages, I have learnt to tailor my lessons to the needs of each student. With younger students and/or those with dyslexia, I know that visual aids often help, so I like to do drawings for them to illustrate topics and include lots of colours to help them associate themes together. We also use 'trigger words' which help them to associate two topics together. With older students, I find that more challenging online games are a great way of bringing out their competitive side and pushing them to work hard and test their skills. I also like to teach my older students how to apply the skills they learn to their daily lives and real life situations, rather than just for school. In all cases, I like to teach some form of theory, followed by practice in order to test their skills. With Spanish, I focus on speaking and writing, but also give reading and listening tasks to test their skills. I think my students enjoy the fact that I take the time to get to know them and their interests so that I can find the style of teaching that best works for them. I always find that the more I express interest in a student, the more keen they are to share with me and it makes them more excited for lessons and to learn. The more I can learn about them, the easier it is for me to plan lessons that I think they would enjoy. I find it really rewarding to pass on skills and information that I have learnt, especially lingustic ones. Many students really enjoy being able to speak another language and I can see how proud they are when they are able to move from words to sentences to paragraphs, and as their grammar and pronunciation improve. I also see that with geography, students feel proud once they are able to understand a concept that they previously struggled with. I love how they often become very inquisitive once they begin understanding something, and they start to connect topics together.
