A bit about Sarah

With almost 20 years experience in teaching English Language and Literature at GCSE and A Level, I can offer you subject expertise and an adaptive teaching style to suit your needs. My specialism in teaching and learning as a senior leader in a secondary school means I know how to make learning engaging and how to make knowledge stick. What characterises me as a teacher of English? My lessons are always planned to meet the needs of the learners in front of me and I am prepared to try new strategies to motivate and inspire my students. I have a particular interest in the cognitive science of learning and remembering. I also understand the importance of quality feedback as a way of improving results. I have almost 20 years of experience and success in teaching English Language and Literature to students in Year 7 up to Year 13. I've worked with Edexcel and AQA exam boards and I have a proven track record of teaching students the knowledge and skills they need to reach all grades. My particular areas of expertise are: AQA GCSE English Language and Literature Edexcel GCSE English Language and Literature AQA A Level English Language All aspects of KS3 English BA (Hons) English Language and English Literature from Newcastle University Post Graduate Certificate in Education, in teaching English and drama at Secondary level. Teaching and studying English allows us to explore a wide range of human emotions, cultures, and experiences through stories, poetry, and plays. It offers a chance to have fun with vocabulary and to be creative, while developing critical thinking, empathy, and communication skills. Additionally, I enjoy supporting young people to build confidence in my subject because I know that life beyond school can be difficult without the appropriate communication skills to express ourselves and build an identity in the wider world. English skills are the foundations for all of this. When I'm not teaching, I'm outside enjoying the great outdoors. Along with my children and my dog Alfie, we enjoy fell walks, lake swimming and reaping the benefits of being in nature. I listen and support. You learn and thrive. We smile and enjoy lessons along the way. That's my formula for success, which I've used to help hundreds - possibly thousands - of students to achieve success over my time as a teacher. I genuinely enjoy teaching and because of this I can make learning more engaging and inspiring. Furthermore, I work with empathy and understanding so that I understand my students' needs, strengths and challenges and I can adapt my approach to meet those needs. I communicate clearly and break lessons down where necessary, so that my students feel confident to continue with their learning, even when the work feels challenging or initially overwhelming.
