A bit about Shaun H

I have been a teacher for over 18 years. I love breaking down complicated topics into components that can be understood. The key to problem solving is to do lots of problems so admission tests are perfect for improving your understanding. There is a crossover between Physics and Maths and in my previous career I have been an engineer working in the semiconductor field. I have taught Further Maths and Maths A level. I have taught the Edexcel specification which for Further Maths is Further Mechanics , Decision and the Core Pure modules. I can teach A Level Physics as well and there is a lot of crossover between the subjects. I have helped students to get to Oxbridge as well as students who are the first to go to university in their family. I believe that teaching is a process of providing information and drawing out knowledge to be able to then problem solve. My lessons require you to explain your reasoning and part of the process is getting things wrong. Improvement comes from reflecting on your learning and changing your thinking. Each lesson would involve lots of questioning as well as hints on how to proceed to solve a problem. I have been a teacher for over 18 years but have only started tutoring in the past year. It is a real enjoyable process as you get to see improvement very quickly. It does not take long for students to be able to see what they need to do to improve and sometimes it is not just knowledge it is more like coaching students into better study habits. I love the fact that something that looks really difficult can actually be explained once you understand the skills involved. This is particularly apparent when you are doing admission tests. The questions do not require that much knowledge but the skills developed increase the problem solving capability of students. I like to explain new ideas but I think it is important for students to be involved in the process. lecturing has its place but getting student engaged in a difficult idea and then drawing out their understanding is much more enjoyable. It is mixture of applying knowledge and getting students to apply their own understanding.
