A bit about Iain M

Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A Level. I have a strong love of the subjects and their applications, so I really enjoy bringing historical and current research into my lessons. About 12 years ago, while working as a learning support assistant. The two jobs together made me decide to go into teaching. Clear and carefully broken down into digestible steps. Then I build in a lot of small but regular opportunities to recall and practise previous skills. I am also very adaptable, if one approach does not work we can try another and another until we find something that makes sense to the student. Anyone can achieve their goal with carefully considered guidance, motivation to succeed and time dedicated to practise. They are initially directed by the student's identified areas that require improvement, before I probe their understanding further through questioning and seeing how they approach different styles of question. Then I can identify if there are more foundational skills that need to be worked on. Sometimes students request to be pretaught topics that are coming up at school. Seeing students develop a fascination with maths and science and how the world works. The more someone understands the fundamental rules that govern our universe, the more questions they ask and the more I see their face light up on making a new connection. Teaching is so much more effective when it is one-to-one. Each lesson can be perfectly tailored to the student, and they can get immediate and detailed feedback on their learning. My explanations and feedback are clear, supportive and adaptable. I have no ego about being told that something I said didn't make sense, I will rephrase and find a way to tailor the learning to a student's head space. I also teach with a sense of humour. The first time a student I taught finished university and came back to become a teacher, saying I was part of the reason they decided to follow that path. I cater to any exam board. I have the most experience with Edexcel GCSE and A Level Maths and Further Maths, OCR and AQA Triple Award Science and AQA A Level Physics. I have an undergraduate degree in physics, a PGCE in physics with mathematics and a large number of workplace qualifications in educating students with special educational needs and disabilities. I have quite a few nerdy hobbies. I play video games, collectible card games, read books and comics and paint miniatures. I follow scientific news and have been teaching myself tensor calculus. I got experience teaching lessons as a teenager in the Army Cadet Force as a sergeant. I enjoyed the creative challenge of planning lessons. Then after university I worked as a learning support assistant where I got to see the satisfaction students gained from understanding something new or achieving the exam results they worked hard for. My name is Iain. I have been a maths and physics teacher for ten years, and have been tutoring for longer than that. I pride myself on being approachable and conscientious. I love the subjects I teach, and want nothing more than for my students learnt o love them too and achieve the results they work hard for. My biggest challenge is the greyhound my wife and I recently adopted, but I wouldn't swap him for anything else in the world.
