A bit about Laura G

I am currently a secondary school English Language and Literature teacher with experience as an Examiner for the WJEC board in Wales. Therefore, I am thoroughly experienced in teaching exam skills and ensuring students achieve their utmost best in their GCSEs. I can help with: - English Literature (poetry, novels such as “Heroes” and “Of Mice and Men”, plays such as “An Inspector Calls” and anything Shakespeare) - English Language (speech writing, essay writing, exam reading skills, oracy, creative writing etc.) Having been in charge of mentoring other teachers on how to differentiate their lessons in my previous school, I understand the need to create personalised programmes for the individual’s needs, and have been recognised at being able to do this to an excellent standard. I am able to guide students with: - spelling - grammar - punctuation - confidence in reading - confidence in learning ability in general The earlier the student learns the skills listed above, the increased chance of developing a genuine love for learning that will naturally lead to success later in their schooling career. I adopt a “no nonsense” approach to teaching. Children, and teenagers, require clear instructions in a language that they understand when learning new skills, not complicated jargon. I take complex ideas and break them down into manageable tasks to increase a student’s confidence when tackling such tasks. I have also spent a lot of time reading studies on the teenage brain and how to best ensure long term retrieval of information, so you will see me use a lot of mnemonics (excuse the jargon!) and repetition of skills in different settings to ensure that retention is secure. I am clear, concise and confident in my teaching. I always answer a question fully and clearly, so students aren’t left having to guess at my meaning. I am also flexible in my teaching. If a student has not understood a key point, I will adapt my approach and ensure the full understanding of that concept before continuing. From student voice questionnaires, I consistently get feedback that I make my lessons interesting and engaging. If I can make a lesson silly or funny, I will. I believe that a student is much more likely to remember the balcony scene from “Romeo and Juliet” if the teacher is stood on the table playing the part of Juliet, than if we were sat in silence reading. How is a student (or anyone for that matter) supposed to remember information they have found boring to learn? I currently teach, and mark for, the WJEC exam board. I teach years 7-11, ages 11-16, so I offer KS3 and KS4 tutoring. English language skills are transferable across all exam boards. I have also taught the AQA exam board. If you would like me to teach the content of a different exam board, we can have a free conversation about the material covered and I will let you know if it is something I offer.
